How do you figure? These payments occured during the summer and were relatively small and easy to hide. How the hell is Davis supposed to know that a couple of his players head to Miami for the weekend?

It's not like one of these guys rented a house on Franklin St. or started driving a Bentley.

 

Please describe how so. None of these gifts were large enough that they could have reasonably expected to raise eyebrows, imo. And you can't track where these guys are 24/7/365.

 

I think the cumulative of each 'prong' of the scandals will warrant LOIC. The investigation could last a year or so. As Baddour said, "There's a lot of smoke in the room" (or some such shit)....

Anything involving academics should definitely be considered within the realm of what the university should know.

 

Will be interesting to see if Swofford will try and impose additional penalties on the school once the NCAA has handed down any.

If it were just one player and one incident...maybe. But it's multiple players, and it was players that you'd expect would be subjected to the temptations of agents. These were guys who were expected to be big time pro prospects this year. You don't have to know what Joey walk-on is doing all summer, but yeah you'd better know enough to make sure that your first round pro prospects are taking weekend trips to Miami on other people's dime. If you're not doing that, then you're pretty much are defining lack of institutional control.

And something else about all of this that I think puts Butch Davis in a unique position that makes it more on him that he didn't know what was going on, he rebuilt a Miami program that was hit with a big time probation for more or less the same thing. He should know better than most the need to keep tabs on his players.
