I don't think "know the rules before you break them" matters. The other musicians I quoted weren't playing Duke Ellington's swing, they were making their own music, and certainly less poppy than Davis'. Thelonious Monk was proficient, but not technically perfect by any means, and was able to do more with it.

Miles just had kinda bad intonation and he was a lower register player on an instrument that's typically played higher. I probably should've said that to begin with.

I have no opinion on his attitude or ego, honestly.

LMAO, whatever Mags. You really don't get it. I am semi-impressed you use T. Monk as an example because I was going to do the same, but you still miss the point. It has absolutely nothing to do with "technical proficiency." Technical proficiency might be more applicable in a classical musician where it is a structured performance that is meant to be the same every time, more or less.

When 80-90% of your expression is improvised, there are no "wrong" notes. They are just notes that belong to you (the artist), and the value and goodness comes from that fact of existence. There is no right or wrong. It is what it is. That is what that expression means.

    *EDIT*
Technical proficiency reminds me off a workout wonder in football. Mags, you could be the Keary Colbert of Jazz!

I'm not saying this like it's a "Steve Vai is better than Keith Richards" opinion (which obviously isn't true). I'm saying that Miles was creative despite not continuing to master his instrument at all times. Guy fucked up a lot and apparently got bored.

But, a dismissive post by tharan sure is a fresh, new idea. Thanks for that.
