Pitcher gets robbed of a perfect game because an umpire misses a call at first with two out in the ninth.

    No replay.

I'd like to think this is the straw the broke the camels back and baseball will have replay very soon.

Agreed, the runner was out by a foot albeit in very fast motion. Ump admitted after the fact he was wrong as well

Wonder if they can overturn the play and give the pitcher his perfect game? Wouldn't change the outcome of the game since it would be the final out.

who cares exactly? it didn't affect the outcome of the game or the actual accomplishment.

last year, people got all bent out of joint when the nba "took away" a rebound from lebron james' short-lived triple double in new york. a statistical evaluation of the performance doesn't change the nature of the performance. it didn't become a lesser feat because one of his rebounds shouldn't have been scored as a rebound for him.

same with this perfect game. being called safe when he wasn't doesn't affect the actual accomplishment. in fact, i'd argue his game was even more perfect since he actually faced 28 hitters and they were all retired without making it to 1st.

i'm surprised, tho, that of all the sports out there, baseball doesn't have more use of replay. are they really concerned about killing the pace of the game?

It most definitely affects the outcome of the actual accomplishment since there is not accomplishment if the call stands. If he was safe, there is no perfect game.

I think he has a point. Even though it may not be a technically perfect game people will still remember the accomplishment. Harvey Haddix and Ernie Shore both don't technically have perfect games to their credit, but most people consider their games perfect.

Well I guess we could debate the level of accomplishment achieved by the pitcher while accepting that the ump may or may not have fucked up, but I think I would rather use that time to just check the replay.

Can't. Somebody batted after the guy was ruled safe. Can't just cancel that at-bat.
