Anti -depressants

I took it because I was depressed from LSD flashbacks, I think. When those subsided or I learned to handle them better, the depression left, hence the smoothness, maybe. Drugs/meds and alcohol often effect me differently, or I get side effects that most others don't experience.

 

AGREED! Nobody better EVER take my Lexapro.

Friend of mine went to her doctor to see about getting something through a really rough time (husband died, teenager with health problems AND behavioral problems, etc.). Her doctor asked her gently, "do you ever have suicidal thoughts?" She said, "It's not ME I'm concerned about killing!"
I totally understand what she means.

I didn't--but I think I understand the point you are trying to make.

I don't take the Lexapro for depression--it's more of a mood even-outer for me--I think mine is mostly hormonal--plus I have a son that has clinical depression with manic tendencies--can be tough to deal with. Diagnosed at nine years old. (depression runs rampant in my husband's family) Thank God for lithium and effexor or there's no telling what would happen to him.

I don't know how we got by without all the drugs for centuries. I could survive and function without mine, but life is much better, especially for those around me, LOL, since I take it. My son, however, is a different story. I am thankful that mental disorders don't have the stigma they once had.

 

Could it all be mental? Kinda like when a powerlifter goes off roids? Not trying to be critical. Hope you feel better.

 

We're talking about anti depressants. I'm pretty sure there's a mental element involved.

 

Realized that after I posted. Yes, I understand your comment, but was referring to the case when people want a drug just because it's a crutch and not because they need it. I used the steroid reference to symbolize that. Again, not trying to rag on Silver as depression is nothing to be funny about.

 

My doctor put me on Zoloft to try something new about 3.5 years ago. I had a reaction so bad that I couldn't stop freaking out or panicking to the point I thought I was having a heart attack and checked into an ER. They said they had seen that a good many times before. That was scary. I was on Effexor for a while before that and it was just wonderful. I'm not anything right now but really have to fight not to be. Sometimes I wonder if the fighting not to be is really worth the ease of popping a pill every day to make it so much more relaxed and just easier to breath. I'm so crazy I panic about side effects or the harm I'm doing taking them but not thinking about the harm I do not taking them. I'm nuts...I know.

 

Zoloft freaked me also - not so bad I had to go to the hospital, but after the 2nd day, I knew I couldn't handle it. I tried Paxil, Prozac, and Lexapro, all with weird side effects I couldn't handle. But going with nothing the last 7 months was the worst.

I'm on my 2nd day of re-trying the Effexor - it takes a couple of weeks to get back into your system. I'll let you know if I get the same "effects" as before. (insert bad mathmajors joke here). If I feel better, I'm not gonna try stopping again, I'm just gonna keep taking it, as long as I can afford health insurance, which may not be much longer, unless the new "plan" kicks in soon.

 

Change of lifestyle is probably more helpful. Anti-depressants can get you headed in that direction, but the problem with most people who stay on them for long periods of time is they never try to change unhealthy habits. It just enables them to live from day to day.

It's different with everyone. Some people just need something to get them back into balance. Some people are manic, and it's really something as important as insulin for a diabetic. But it's really unfortunate that these things can be prescribed to just about anybody, regardless if they've been diagnosed with something or not. It's a reason why healthcare is a mess.
