Ebron, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound tight end from Greensboro (N.C.) Smith, called UNC assistant coach Allen Mogridge, his primary recruiter, and made the verbal commitment.

“[Mogridge] just happened to be next to Coach [Butch] Davis,” Ebron said. “So I told both at the same time.

“Coach ‘Mo’ said he felt like he had a heart attack just now. Coach Davis was very excited – I think he was bouncing off walls.”

Ebron, who is ranked one of the state's top five junior prospects by Scout.com, has received nearly 20 scholarship offers, including Alabama, Clemson, Duke, East Carolina, Maryland, Miami, NC State, Rutgers, Virginia, and West Virginia.

“UNC is the first school and it’s the last school,” Ebron said. “There’s nothing about UNC that I don’t like. I wanted to commit, so I ran with it. Now it’s time to just focus on school.”

“North Carolina felt like family when I went there [and] family when I left. The coaches are always looking out for the players… UNC was just the best choice.”

Ebron labeled UNC his leader last football season. However, he backed off that statement a few months after the season.

“[UNC] has always been my leader,” Ebron said. “I was keeping it on the low. I was disguising that thing.”

Originally, Ebron had planned to announce his college choice at a press conference close to Signing Day.

“I just felt like it was time to buckle down and focus on the season and let’s get ready to roll,” Ebron said. “I have my school, so let’s go.”

UNC’s offense utilizes two tight ends – an ‘Y’ (tight end) and a ‘H’ (h-back).

“They said they want to start me at the ‘Y’ – spread me out, put me on the line, go across the middle,” Ebron said. “They said they want me as the all-purpose tight end.”

Ebron says he doesn’t plan on visiting any other schools, outside of UNC.

“As of right now, I’m pretty much done,” Ebron said.

 

It really depends on what they do with Sam Ellis. I think he's a guy who can really help that offensive line.

 

Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- Former Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Tony Dungy addressed the North Carolina football team Monday at the Kenan Football Center, offering words of advice and encouragement during a 45-minute speech.

Dungy has prior relationships with several of Carolina's assistant coaches, including wide receiver coach Charlie Williams, who was on Dungy's staff in Tampa Bay.

"Tony Dungy is one of the most respected people in the NFL," said head coach Butch Davis. "Not only was he a great coach, but he is a man of faith who all of our players could learn something from. We have several assistants with NFL experience and we were able to reach out to Tony and have him speak to our players about many life experiences and life lessons."

Dungy played three seasons in the NFL before embarking on a 28-year coaching career that included Indianapolis' 29-17 win over Chicago in Super Bowl XLI (2006 season). He coached two more seasons before retiring.

Dungy spoke to the Tar Heels about his formula for reaching the highest level, which included four key points - talent, hard work, teamwork and chemistry.

"If you have those four things, you can win," said Dungy. "The amazing thing is three of them you can control. One of them you can't control and that's talent. God gives you talent and it's the first thing you need. But amazingly, it's not the most important thing."

Dungy said his Super Bowl winning team in 2006 was not his most talented, but it had all the other ingredients of a winner.

After a brief question and answer session, Dungy watched the Tar Heels' spring practice at Navy fields before leaving Chapel Hill.

everyone runs a 4.4 until it's time for combine. Universally, there are 15 or so players who are supposed to run a 4.4 on any football field.

 

Not everyone. I've seen a bunch of HS RB's and WR's listed in the 4.6 to 4.8 range who ended up with better times at the HS combines.
