Someone explain this to me. Based upon the article I posted that someone would be more apt to trade for him as opposed to getting into a bidding war with others and trade for Peppers after we franchise him. It seems like it's going to be a thin free agent season from what I've read. Disregard what we would get. We franchise him and determine what teams (maybe before we franchise him) are willing to swallow the big salary in the first uncapped year and then give them and Peppers a week to work out a long term deal that both can live with. The Panthers then would at least get something (picks or players) so we don't get totally shit upon.

I was listening to ESPN radio on the way home and John Clayton predicted a thin free agency period and that along with what the article pointed out with the free agent pool being thin more teams would get into the bidding process to get Peppers so a few teams would be willing to bite the bullet and make more attractive offers to the Panthers knowing we are still considering franchising him, to keep Peppers from going totally free agent. We franchise him, with a team willing to take him on as franchised. Is this feasible, and if so what do you think is the best the Panthers could hope to get in return? San Fran is mentioned for instance. Could we get back our 1st and if they were willing I wonder if someone else would say how about our 1st and player "A"..

If a team takes him on via trade they can still negotiate a new deal and, as I've said many times before, no one would trade a high pick for a one year rental. A first isn't a lock but it's possible, first and a player doesn't mean first and a star it's probably someone that won't knock you dead, a 2nd is most likely but that beats the shit out of a hopeful 3rd compensatory next year. And don't rule out spot swapping, like we get someone's 2nd and we move to their spot in the third.

That's what I am alluding to. Give the team we are trading him to a week to work out their own deal. Since Peppers didn't sign his franchise tender last year would that kill us in a trade if he pulls the same shit or would we have to find out from him where he'll go? I know we won't get a super player but a player like Drayton who no one seemed to want or an Al Wallace (a throw in essentially earlier) who was serviceable would be fine if he filled a need

I hope at this point that they do some deal with someone. I'm tired of this Pepper's drama after the season. If he really doesn't want to be here (and I think he doesn't) then get what you can for him. No way they can just let him go for nothing. We'll lose a lot on D but what else can you do?

Real quick - name five superstar 34 defensive ends.

Exactly. It's not a money-making position. It's a very boring, two-gap, stop-the-run-first position. He would probably take custodian job in Haiti before ever agreeing to play 34 DE on a regular basis.

He has the athletic ability to play OLB and could probably become awesome at it, but I agree that he needs to be in a 43. The idea that he would get more sacks in a 34 isn't necessarily true. There's much more responsibility that comes with playing OLB. I think he realizes that he's better at end, and I think his bitching after '08 was more about growing tired of Trgovac dropping him into coverage every other play.

I’ll admit that I was wrong . . . was just trying (at all costs) to consider every possible avenue to unload the peppers to SOMEone for SOMEthing.
Probably ain’t gonna happen is it? Still holding out some hope but it wanes by the hour. Just heard Mortensen mention the Browns as a good possibility (meh)

might start hoping that he and his jackoff agent go down in flames. . .
What are the chances that peppers walks, he & agent fuck around, and he ends up playing NO WHERE next year . . . . For ZERO dollars?! I heard Claytons little clip mentioning a 7 year (haynesworth-like) deal . . . Is someone really going to agree to a 100+ million deal over 7 years with a 30 year old defensive player? Given peppers attitude I wouldn’t guarantee him 45,000, much less 45 million!
It could escalate into one of those bitter foolish disputes that drags on and on . .. whoever the lucky team is might just end up not having peppy on the field much of 2010 (if at all) :woohoo:

    less than zero

that makes less than zero sense

So you are saying he walks, becomes a FA, somebody signs him and then they have a contract disupute? WTF
