I think you are confused as to position and responsibility of officials. Spots are reviewed and corrected often. You won't see the referee overrule his spot because the referee does not spot the ball.

The official that spotted the ball was a line judge. He would not be reviewing anything. The referee is the crew chief and he would be the official reviewing the play and making a decision. He generally stands behind the QB and views the field without much movement.

In this case, the line judge stepped in and made a poor spot. It may not have been a first down but it was close and he would not have been the one reviewing the spot of the ball.

I am constantly amazed by the level of football ignorance on this board.

 

He didn't have posession of the football past the first down marker, which seems to me to be something you'd need to call that a first down. But, way to try to make it about me. I don't think I was on the fucking field.

If he's going backward of his own accord, he'd be stopped where he was tackled in that situation. Smitty had one of those last night where he caught the ball at one point, but his momentum kept him going back toward the line of scrimage, and he was short of the first down.

 

spots don't get overruled almost as a hard rule. you have to prove the official didn't judge correctly based on what he saw.

But, either way you can be unhappy about "being challenged"...it won't make it a first down.
