If you want gas mileage a Civic or Corolla is going to be hard to beat.

I drove around to a bunch of dealerships yesterday. The sticker on the window of the Kia Soul only rates it 24 in town and thirty on the road. Screw that. Not worth the deal for just another 5mpg. The only thing that gets thirty five is the Hybrids and they are over priced. I guess I'll just stay home more and the economy can fend for itself.

It depends. If you have the income, get whatever the heck you want. I've already decided I'm driving mine into the ground. It's a '02 and still drives well. Of course I'd like something new but when I consider future college tuition for two kids versus an asset that will lose value and only last a couple of years, it becomes a no brainer, at least for me.

I had a 2003 Civic and it regularly got over 35mpg in mixed driving. I think the EPA rating on it called for 29 city and 36 highway. They changed the way they rate the mpg a while back and it is a little low now.

That's the first time I've heard of a car getting more mpg than the sticker says. I do hear reports of people buying new cars and end up disappointed that the mpg is less than advertised.

They changed the way they rate the mpg on cars a couple of years ago and when they did they revised it down.

Try this site, it has the EPA ratings as well as ratings from owners.

If you can find an old Geo Metro or Suzuki Swift that is in decent shape you would get great gas mileage. They are rated around 38 city and 45 highway. They can't make cars that get that any more because of safety regulations.

Thelt I made my buy today. Bought me a 2006 Ford Ranger. It's a nice truck. I've been shopping for over a month trying to find the one I wanted and my local Ford dealer located me one this week. It's an extended cab xlt. It has a 3.0 V6 with a 5 speed manual. Sticker says 24 city 28 highway.Carfax was clean. Truck came from Fontana California. It only has 38000 miles on it. Edmunds .com gives a true market value for it at $15,250. I got it for $10,500. Gonna sell my 1980 ford f-100 for $800. Looks like hell but runs like a new one.

I sold my '84 F-150, that was running like a champ, two years ago for $1750 because I didn't want to pay insurance on two vehicles.
I regret it to this day. Nothing takes the place of a good pickup.
