I just hate the idea of paying interest on a depreciating asset.

i pay mine off in a month or so. i'm considering running that thing into the ground. i'm also considering getting a new car. i don't particularly like the car i drive -- how does that factor in? it's something i use every day. shouldn't i enjoy and be proud of it? that's a non-utilitarian view, but one i recognize as real. weather i act on it or not is still to be determined.

Larry, I think the thing is that you can't justify getting a newer car when a person is in credit card debt. Furthermore, the depreciation on vehicles is a huge cost that is hidden to most people. They only say that they can afford the payment which may be true but to really get the affect of depreciation, they should roll down their window once a week and let a $100 bill slip out. Then they would feel what depreciation is doing to them. You should enjoy what you drive and you will enjoy it most when it isn't trailing a payment behind you and you can afford the depreciation that will occur.

I think they compare/factor the rate of inflation versus loan interest rates.

My thing is that I want a truck. I could use one for various reasons. There is nothing wrong with my current car and I do not hate it or anything. I thought about trying to sell my current car and buy a truck with the proceeds. That would not be taking on any new debt. I am not sure if I could sell it for enough money to get something decent though. I am probably better off just doing without a truck for a while longer...

Both my Jeep and my Truck are paid for. I want something with 35mpg. I am going to wait until next summer when the economy is Still sucking and prices are still low or lower. Kia just came out with a 2010 Soul (35mpg) that has some cargo room for 16K. I'll trade the Jeep. I am going to wait until they find the all bugs before I buy one. It ain't about "style" for me anymore it's ALL about MPG.

My sister just bought a Soul. She seems to like it so far. It is kinda strange looking.

Reb let me give you a warning on buying a Kia. Parts are hard to come by and higher than hell when you can find them. My nephew runs a paint and body shop and when a wrecked kia comes in his supplier always has trouble finding parts for those vehicles. Last week a man hit a deer in a 2006 Kia Spectrum. He busted a right front strut. No local parts supplier could get a strut for this car. It is a dealer item only and the dealer gets a lot more for their parts than your local Advance store. I was told by my Nationwide Insurance agent that collision insurance on Kia's and most other Imports are much higher because of this problem and it's getting worse every year.

I know a guy who had his clutch go out on a 2006 Optima at 28k miles. The warranty first would not cover it blaming his driving style. After going round and round they paid for the parts and he paid for the labor......

My dad bought a new Sportage several years ago and it has given problems. The rear end went out when it was fairly new but the warranty did cover it. I would not buy a used one that is for sure.

I'm going to have to go with the fact I have never wrecked a vehicle and I would save much more on gas than any extra $ on my insurance premium. I Have to get the MPG. But your comment is noted, nothing is written in stone on buying a Kia.
