not having a payment on a car that's still under 80,000 miles, is still enjoyable, and still looks new is a fantastic feeling.

I might never buy a new car again, though. You just seem to lose so much extra in the process.

Well and you can find great deals on 1-2 year old cars. Talked to a lady two weeks ago who had 16K from totaling her car in a wreck and an extra 7K sitting around. She bought a 2007 Escalade last year for 23K with 35,000 miles on it. She has had the car for a year and absolutely no problems. Guy had to unload it because he couldn't afford the payments anymore and she had the cash. Oh yeah, she told me the guy told her that he paid 52K for it in 2007.

I agree. I have two '02 model year cars and haven't had a car payment on either for over 5 years. I hope I never have another car payment.

I agree, it's a great time to buy a car. I just woulnd't buy one unless I could pay all cash for the purchase.

Same way here. We are starting to look at a mini-van with a third kid on the way and at the same time we are buying a house right now (another great deal). So, the wife has gone from looking at Honda Odyssey's to Kia's and Toyota Sienna's. Odyssey's really retain their value pretty well and we just can't afford it along with the new house and we aren't doing payments. Thus, we get less of a vehicle and we are okay with that. Rather have that than a payment.

    Congrats on the kid!

I've been wanting something new also lately but then I remind myself the car I have is perfectly fine. We did look at the Odyssey many moons ago but decided on something cheaper, for the same reason you mentioned.

I haven't had car payments in 20+ years. I'll buy a two or three yo car, drive it for five or 10 years, trade and make the difference in cash. Believe me, it's nice not to have payments hanging over your head. The last payments I made were three mo/same as cash on a home sound system. I hated it.
