I'm having a similar problem in my front yard. One spot, about 2' by 4' that refuses to green up. I've replaced the sod twice, but no luck so far. I'm thinking about trying bermuda there instead of fescue.

Anything spilled on that spot? I've also got a spot like that but it's from where a contractor cleaned his damn paintbrush.

Nothing spilled that I'm aware of. I did have a sprinkler line break in that area, and it flooded pretty badly. I'm wondering if the flooding just washed away all the nutrients in the soil. The last patch of sod I applied was over new Miracle Grow starter soil, but it still yellowed badly.

i'm thinking that you've managed to purchase a home on an old, ancient, alien laser beam range. yep, those random brown patches are more than just mere "soil" issues. try placing that unwanted dinner ware, or that '67 Rambler your wife has been driving the last 20 years, on the exact spot, overnight. if my theory holds true, there ought to be a cinder there, the size of a raisin, the next morning. you wont have to thank me, i've been helping solve the worlds problems for about a day and a half. its nothing really.

Soil test is probably the only way to find out.
