They were good in the early 90's when Leyland was coaching. They had that rotation of Doug Drabek, John Smiley, a young Tim Wakefield (He's been around forever) and Bonds, Bonilla, Van Slyke. I remember going to Three Rivers and seeing Andy Van Slyke hit a bomb. He was a good player back in those days and just fell off the end of the earth. I think he's the first base coach for the Tigers now.

It occurred to me after posting this that Pittsburgh is having a really good year. Pirates still suck tho.

I remember going to three rivers in around '95, Bucs playing the padres. san diego's up by quite a bit in the fourth and Fernando Valenzuela, looking like he'd just swallowed a beer keg, waddles to the plate. my friends and I agree that if he hits a homerun we're getting on the boat and heading back to station square and then down to the bars on Carson Street. First pitch he deposits it into the right field seats. We leave and that's the last game I saw at three rivers.
