That's the whole problem with arguing solely on value, you don't make a pick just on value-need has to factor in. Yeah, we got value and an end, but one that other teams passed over continuously. Why? If I'm not mistaken we have Peppers this year and most likely not the next. Unless management is betting 100% on a holdout, wouldn't it be better to get an end as a reserve this year that could contribute and get a franchise end in the first round next year? By saying Brown has first round value, your basically saying he's the franchise end. That's my interpretation. I don't have that kind of confidence in him, yet. I'm HOPING he makes a believer out of me.

However, if Brown doesn't pan out, where are we getting Peppers replacement? In the second next year? I don't think so.

As for Otah, he was first round talent in the first round that we moved BACK INTO the first round giving up a first round pick. Wasn't too crazy about losing the pick this year, but it was a round one swap for a round one guy--even trade based on an actual selection in the first round, not on preconceived value.

The gripe I have is we gave up a first round pick for a second round selection (forget value for a minute) and for a guy that slid for some mysterious reason unbeknowst to us or the Panthers' staff signifiying the other 31 teams weren't looking for a starting end or were all just clueless about this gem.

I tend not to look a gift horse in the mouth and I question things, it's my nature. Had Brown had surgery, been busted for pot, combine numbers were deemed underperforming, SOMETHING tangible as to why most other team passed on the guy, I would have an explination. Alas, no good reason why he was passed over and over again.

If Brown turns out to be our franchise end--a Pro Bowl calibre end (not by default), then I'll be as estatic as some of you guys are now about him and the lost first rounder would be justified.

So in a nutshell, my issue with the Brown pick:

    1) Lost 1st round pick

    2) Strange reason why Brown fell, and fell so far depending on the source

    3) Need was greater at DT

3.a) Didn't trade Peppers so finding his replacement this draft was not pararmount

Normally yes, but Kiper dinged us on that this year and partially why he graded our draft meagerly.

I don't really have good answers for what essentially amounts to taking the most negative point of view on each individual part of this situation.

FWIW, I don't like giving up the 1 either. And, I'm not going to pretend in hindsight to my own advantage or the team's - I wouldn't have made the Otah trade and I wouldn't have made the Brown one. But I believe the team did what they felt they needed to do and I can't begrudge them for not drafting my guy, or my scenario. Hell, a lot of people would've been ecstatic about Robinson in the 3rd and Hoyer in the 4th, never would've batted an eye.

I think it would be more accurate to think in terms of the draft value chart rather than 1st and 2nds. In the end, that is what you are giving up despite your annual alotment.

I think next year being a possible uncapped situation might create a couple scenarios:

One is that teams will be able to afford a Peppers and might be more willing to give up higher picks if he plays well this year.

The other is if Peppers is indeed gone and we have an extra few bucks to spend, we will be sitting pretty. If not and peppers is still retained, we have a hell of a pair of rushers.

I have no problem with trading the 1st rounder for a 2nd round pick if the guy is deserving and fills a need, here are a couple reasons why:

    1) Everyone knows the Panthers don't have a lot of salary cap money, and I feel it won't be much different next season, now they don't have to pay a 1st round pick.

    2) What if they had waited a year, got the 15-25th pick, and drafted a DE. IMO they would be a year behind what they are now. By drafting Brown, they have a prospect DE who at the start of the 2010 season will be going into his second season, more comfortable and ready to produce.

    3) What if Brown had gone back to FSU for his senior season, he could have upped his draft stock to being a top 10, 15, or 20 pick. Same as getting him next year now, and like before he is in the system a year earlier.

    4) With or without Julius Peppers, DE was a position of need for the Panthers.

    5) HEY IF WE NEED A 1ST ROUND PICK NEXT YEAR WE CAN ALWAYS TRADE 2011'S 1ST ROUND PICK:fan_wave2:

If you're going by anything Mel Kiper says I can see why we disagree.

If we went about this the normal route for arguments sake and got Stewart at #10 last year, Otah at #19 this year and Brown at, say #24 next year all in the first round would you have a problem?

Just because some pinhead on tv tells you this guy is a 1st round talent vs. this guy who is a 3rd round talent. They don't know. It's a crap shoot. If Brown was on top of the Panthers draft board and they valued him at a first round value, which they obviously did, then what's the problem?

    We got Stewart at 13.

The results in the league are a crapshoot but generally the more talented players go higher.

Problem I have is we didn't have to give a 1st for a 2nd, we could have given 2 lower picks and achieved the same thing. Whether Brown is projected as a 1st round slider or not it doesn't matter because he was picked and will be paid like a 2nd round pick. We basically got what we wanted, but paid too much in draft picks. 1st round picks are almost a lock to be a starter, but 2nd round picks are not. We gave up a starter next year for a starter this year, but we didn't have to. We could have kept the 1st and given up a questionable Safety that we picked up in the late 2nd round along with a 4th that we used on a situation guy. It was a poor decision to trade the 1st, not a poor decision to take Brown in the 2nd.

I heard someone say that a 2nd and 4th was not enough, but if you look a 2 or 3 picks after Brown, you'll see that it was enough to move that team.
