Home town guy. Played HS ball in eastern NC. Hope he works out well for the Panthers.

I'm glad someone pointed that out...my recollection was Freeney was in the 240's when he came out....

If we didn't give up a FIRST, I'd be more enthused about the Brown pick. Granted the guy has talent and has the skill set to get after the QB, but if he doesn't pan out to be an every down end then I will be disappointed.

I just have my reservations about how he's going to hold up in the run game and if he does wind up starting, how he's going to hold up versus guys 50-60pounds heavier on a consistent basis.

It is also to early to start comparing Brown to Freeney. Just because Freeney was undersized and panned out doesn't mean Brown will. Besides, Freeney was the exception, not the rule, that undersized DEs do well at the pro level.

I'll be pulling for the guy to be an every down player and hope he DOES become the next Dwight Freeney. I think the comparisons are a bit premature, though since we have yet to see Brown in action as a pro.

and he filled out a little over time, whereas Mathis is a generous 245 now. Brown fits within range of a right end, where Mathis is a definite exception and is more in that Hilee Taylor size.

At any rate, I definitely feel like Mathis is a bit of a gimmick. I definitely don't feel like a guy of Brown's abilities is a gimmick.

The other knock on Brown is his height....6-1 1/2....I would think you'd almost rather have a 256 lb DE at 6-1/6-2 than stretch out 265 lbs on a 6-4 or 6-5 frame. Compact and strong vs long and lean.

If he's a good hand-fighter and can use his strength to keep OT's from getting their arms extended and hands on him, his compact frame could be an asset.

Another thing about a compact end is that shorter legs usually allow more agility and cutting ability than a long-legged guy.

In a perfect world, you'd want a guy with Peppers frame, strength and speed, but there are advantages to being short.

If Otah had been a bust it would have been a stupid move to trade our pick to get him. If Brown is a good player no one will care if he was a first, second, or seventh round pick. The Panthers feel he was worth it.

As with all picks, if he works out Hurfox is a genius.

Smith wouldn't be a better player if he was a number 1 pick and Pepper wouldn't be a worse player if he was picked in the 4th round.

No more stupid than to trade up this year. Last year we traded back INTO the first to get a first round selection. This year lost our first round pick only to move up in the second. We are not talking apples to apples here. Any trade up/reach that flops is viewed as a dumb pick.

That's the reason Smith was a steal in the third round and we didn't have to give up a single, solitary pick for him either. Beautiful!!! As far as Peppers, do you really think he would have been anything less than a top 10 overall selection? Bad analogy.

Interesting - didn't know that. That would make him seem more like a Freeney clone.

I don't understand why we didn't just give our 2nd and 4th to move up and take Brown. That would have made sense, seeing as we know Brown is a potential starter and worth moving up for, but Safety from Troy and the 4th could both be a waste of a pick. Next year we would be able to get another starter in the 1st. The trade simply doesn't make sense, unless we would have picked up a starter with our second 2nd round pick, but we didn't.
