I love how 'Dean even took 4 of his own players' is somehow played off like a negative to the Smith situation. It's been widely held by many that the college NC (you know, a team that has proven that it could play together) would fare much better than the college-all stars or even the pro all-stars that had never played with each other. Dean stacked his team with his players and his PG (amazing player, wish I had gotten to see him play in college) and won the Medal. That's great, that's what you are supposed to do. In no way is it more impressive than what happened in 2008.

I don't actually watch that much ACC basketball, relatively speaking.

3rd in active coaching wins, but 12th active coach in winning percentage... 27th all time in winning percentage... an average regular season finish of 6th place in the last six years in the Big East. Three more sure signs of one of the best coaches today.

Just for reference, Jim Boeheim has as many double digit loss seasons in the past six years as Bobby Lutz. And he has as many double digit loss seasons in the past four as Roy has in his entire career.

    Ok, this is ridiculous.
Do you think UNC won the national title in 1976? Well, they didn't. The guys on that team lost by 15 points in the first round of the NCAA tournament (thanks for bringing that up...) The UNC team that year wasn't on the same level as a college NC team (as you put it) so that argument isn't valid. So the 'stacked his team' argument (which is a REACH) is out as well.

My 6 year old nephew could win the gold medal with the 12 best players in the NBA. It's just that simple.

OK, you convinced me. Boeheim is terrible.

you won the argument. It's not even close. International basketball wasn't nearly as strong in 1976 as it is now.

And Dean's roster in '76? Here you go:

    Phil Ford
    Steve Sheppard
    Adrian Dantley
    Walter Davis
    Quinn Buckner
    Ernie Grunfeld
    Kenneth Carr
    Scott May
    Tate Armstrong
    Tom LaGarde
    Philip Hubbard
    Mitch Kupchak

Not exactly amateur hour. Yugoslavia won silver (USA beat them by 21 points for the gold) and the Soviets took Bronze. Bunch of no-names on both teams.

It's a joke that the guy has a job. I mean, he's pretty much the same coach as Bobby Lutz. You go 28-10, it might appear you had a half-way decent season, until you look at the shitty teams they beat: Memphis (in Memphis with one starter hurt), Kansas, FLorida to name a few. Awful. Maybe there's a powerful booster out there who can get this guy's ass kicked to the curb.
