Peppers to Pats for 2nd round pick pretty much done (mags edits because it's not)

Hey, if he thinks moving to the 34 scheme is where he is going to ultimately make his mark in the league (not that he already hasn't) then more power to him. Especially when his departure frees up nearly $17M in cap sapce and lands us an extra pick or picks to compensate for our lack of a first rounder this year.

If you can't tell, I want this trade to happen. When he was the second pick overall in 2002, I knew somewhere down the road he was going to be a cap nightmare. It's a shame we couldn't get a championship while he was with us assuming he does ship out of Carolina this offseason. Now he's more of a hinderance than a help in the scope of team viability.

 

Can the "new" team negotiate a long-term deal this offseason or does the tag have to remain for the 2009 season? Because those monies will be THE topic of any trade talk. No team wants to be strapped with that kind of salary.

What do you think Peps is wanting more; money or the switch to a 34 defensive team of championship calibre? Obviously he'll want both, but teams poised to win it all in 2009 are fairly cap strapped so Peps is probably going to have to choose one path or the other.

 

The 17 million will go away if they negotiate a new deal.

He has said it's not about money and has turned down a huge sum already, leading me to believe that.

in regular trade situations, the two sides agree to terms without having been traded, and Peppers is still a pending free agent, just with restrictions. So he can openly negotiate. Technically he's the only one that would be able to do so, the team's hands are officially tied on what we can do right now.

Regarding money, if the Pats or whoever want to wean him down, they'll probably use the ideal of him being an OLB as bait. OLBs get less money, especially on the high end. James Harrison probably signs a $10 mil per year deal, versus the higher deals we're looking at for ends that eclipse 12-13 mil.

2. He will earn his first ring in 2010!

What happened to the Pats not overspending on Free Agents?

 

I would take New England's number one and one of their seconds even the lowest one and be happy.

 

I don't think Pep and his agent are in any hurry right now. I believe they'll strecth it out another month until about a week before the draft and let their true intentions be known and only then will we know about a trade.

Why do that other than as a means to screw over the Panthers in the free agent market? What happened to "I do not want to hurt them when I leave"?
