Opinions are all over the place. It's pretty well split among the media personalities. Among those saying it won't happen are those assuming that Peppers will not bend on his franchise tag money. Others think the match is too perfect for it not to happen. All agree a deal is not as close as first reported.

It's a given that New England will not pay Peps elite money, so the question begs--does Peppers want his right fit (3-4 backer) and a chance for a championship OR does he want to get paid Albert Haynesworth type money?

I wonder how long it will take before the NFL outlaws the tag-and-trade. I think it will eventually be (and should be) a violation of player rights, and it's also ridiculous that teams are able to get high draft picks for a player who's supposed to be free to sign anywhere.

And no, I don't think Peppers is a great fit for New England. No doubt that he would have a big impact on that defense, but their 34 systems like to use those OLBs in coverage more than a team like Dallas or San Diego. I don't see him being dropped into coverage any less than he was here, and that was something we all complained about.

 

We had him drop into coverage quite a bit from his DE postion here. Not to mention a few picks and passes defended over the years. More over, he's probably the most pure athlete of any DE in the league now. If he can't make the transition then it's hard to assume many DEs could make the switch.

If that's the case there are going to be a lot of teams gambling in the draft this year because there are more prospects at DE switching to 3-4 OLBs than solid traditional 4-3 DEs, especially early on. That is unless the argument is they can be trained better out of college.

 

I know he can make the switch and be a pretty damn exceptional player in that role. I just think he's a little misguided if he thinks it will automatically lead to more sack opportunities. We talk about how playing in a 43 hurts him because he has run responsibilities, but in a 34 he would have run and pass responsibilities. An offense can shift you out of that pass rushing role by using motion and putting players in the slot.

 

I'm glad Schefter is saying he doesn't believe it will happen for just #34. That's not saying it absolutely won't, however. If it does, I'll be calling for Hurney's head.

agreed. I can understand where people are coming from on the idea that we need to get something, and that something's better than nothing, but we don't have to take a significantly substandard trade either.


I think Gantt's being a little extreme thinking we'll get both the 1st and the top 2. The first I'd probably take almost as-is really. Or take a 3rd. Two seconds is good. It's less than Allen but more than just the 34. I'd definitely be happy with a 1 and 3 or 1 and 4, I have a hard time seeing a 1 and the high 2. Certainly, lead with that in negotiation (after the standard 2 #1s) but don't expect to get it.
