I won't argue K is a better coach because his resume proves that, but your statement about Roy being handed everything is far from the truth. He was Dean Smiths bitch back as an assistant at UNC, while holding a part time job to support his family. He also was handed NCAA sanctions before taking over at Kansas. The only thing he's been handed was a storied program like K was Duke, and blue chip athletes that Doh recruited.

Did Duke have a National Championship before K got there?

Did Kansas have one when Roy got there?

Who got them 3, who didnt get them any?

if you're basing the quality of a program and it's coach soley on National Championships then you're correct - I don't think that's fair nor accurate, but that's your opinion.

Duke was a very good program before Coach K got there, and will always be a good program after he leaves. Bubas built Duke, Coach K perfected it.

The same for UNC and Kansas.

Ok, now I understand you want to change the rules and make this about Roy vs. the rat instead of UNC vs. dook, so I'll bite and play along with your new rules.

Roy's winning percentage is the best active percentage in the NCAA and 3rd best in the history of the game...isn't the point of the game to win?

Let's talk about total history as a head coach:

Roy has only 2 seasons that he did not win 20 games, Coach K has had 4. Coach K has had 2 losing seasons, Roy...NONE. Coach K has 9 30+ win seasons in 28 years at Duke while Roy has 8 30+ win seasons in 20 seasons and I'm thinking Roy will get another 30 win season this year (hopefully) making it 9 30+ wins in 21 seasons.

Roy has only 4 seasons with 10 losses or more, Coach K has 6. Roy has only missed the NCAA tournament once - K - 3 times.

(By the way, I'm not counting any of K's years at Army in the numbers above. And not counting '95 when he left because of 'exhaustion'. (Which K was rumored to later appeal to have those games removed from his record...))

So, let's talk NBA, as some have done on this site this year - Roy = 22 draft picks, K = 40 draft picks...so technically, Coach K has had the most talent of the 2 coaches, so shouldn't we be saying that more of his teams have underachieved?

But let's talk about most recently. In the "what have you done for me lately" world of college basketball, Roy's been increasingly successful with 3 Final Fours, two national title games and a National Championship in the past 6 years, while K's level of success has been dropping off, with only one FF and a first and second round flameout in the last 6 years, despite two #1 final poll rankings where five of his last six teams were in the top 7 nationally.

Roy has won 5 of the last 6, with the only loss coming when Ty Lawson was hurt.

But the question of the "better" coach might best be approached by asking yourself, "Which one would I like to coach my own kid?" Would you prefer a foul-mouthed, self-centered rat, or a down-to-earth, genuinely nice but intensely competitive guy who always holds the kids' best interest at heart? Really, there's no contest.

    3> 1

    11> 2

Olympic Coach of Gold Medal team.

    More wins.

Lets see, Roy handed a "probation" team (but not stripped of any players) at Kansas. Then handed 3 first round draft picks at UNC....its easy not to lose when you can chose when you go into a situation. Which is why Roy didnt take over after Gut....but i digress.

NBA means shit to me, i don't watch it, I dont care if Hansblow is an All-Star or rides the pine, same as if Henderson, Singler are great or not....thats a non factor to me. But over the last 10years the Pros from Duke are putting up better numbers than those of UNC.

Keep on, you are trying hard, ill give you a C-.

K, came from Army to a program with no championships and some tradition.

Roy was an Asst. at UNC, handed a program at Kansas where former UNC player Larry Brown left him with talent but on probation, then when the time comes to come back to UNC, Roy does, when the talent is left for him....why did he pass up the opportunity to coach the likes of Boone, Capel and Lang? Maybe because they sucked?
