I think it's $1 mil per day penalty for being over the cap. Doesn't count against the cap but does fuck you hard.

The league rules say you have to give up two #1 picks if you sign a player who has been tagged. That is what we did to get Sean Gilbert back in the day. There is the leeway for two teams to negotiate for something less than two #1s. If we tag Peppers and can only get a second round pick for him then we could take it and let him go. The $17 million comes off our cap and we have an extra second round pick. I do not see the down side to tagging him. I am certain some team would offer something for him.

If there is leeway in the value of the tag, then why is said that it is worth 2 #1s? Wouldn't every situation then be a result of the negotiation? I don't think the 2 #1s criteria is a suggestion.

On the other hand, they could tag him, let the other team work out a long term deal with him, then rescind the tag. That makes the deal outside the requirements of the tag. They would then normally get something out of it.

But this is assuming you have leverage, which the Panthers don't. They cannot keep Peppers tagged throughout the season at 17mil. Teams know this. The only reason it might work is one team wants to sign him for something before another team gets a shot at it. But if nothing happens, I don't think it is any secret that we aren't going to keep him tagged throughout the season and would eventually have to release him if he won't sign a long term contract.

If we rescind the tag he becomes unrestricted free agent, so we would get nothing except maybe comp. picks next year.

because people don't understand it that well.

Right, so in a sense, it sounds like it would just be a gentleman's agreement. Technically, the moment we rescind the tag, for whatever reason, he is a UFA, and the other team is not "legally" required to give us anything. Am I right on that assumption?

And if the tag is not rescinded, then it is required that the receiving team forfeit 2 #1s to us.

The pair of #1s is only if they sign him to a contract, sans any trade. Even with the franchise tag, he's still a Free Agent.

We could agree to less compensation in a trade.

I think it has been done before where a tagged player has been traded for less than two first round picks. Jared Allen was tagged last year and then traded to the Vikings.

The Chiefs got a first round pick, two third rounders and swapped 6th rounders with the Vikings.

I think once the players signs the tag deal he is no longer a free agent and can therefore be traded.

Ah yes, I think you are right. If I remember correctly, the team with the tag actually signs the contract with terms that the other team and player worked out, then the trade takes place.

But still, it is going to be a balancing act with the market knowing we most likely cannot keep Peppers at 17mil. So if they do nothing, they know we will have to release him (assuming he absolutely won't sign with Carolina).
