Haynesworth would make me feel better.

Move on folks. He's out. He wants a change, and it's not for us to judge why. 7 years is a long goddamned time. Javon Kearse bolted Tennessee back in 2004 for Philly, and ended up right back where he started. It's a business.

We need to make enhancements to our team that extend beyond keeping Peppers. Losing him impacts us tremendously, but it will allow the team to put their focus on adding depth to other spots that will help us do what we want to do: win games.

Julius Peppers is an unrestricted free agent.

Reed is suggesting that the Panthers should have the right to trade Peppers, which is retarded.

Regardless of whether he wants to be here or not we should still tag him and see if we can work out a trade. I doubt many teams expect us to just release him and get nothing for a player of his caliber who is still in his prime.

Haynesworth would be better, but he's risky.

Assuming we were intending to spend this level of money, though, I'd take a portion of that and put Terrell Suggs there. I could live with that, assuming we felt he could add to sack totals by rushing every down.

You know what I meant. We have the power to tag him and teams will not expect us to not do that. You do not let a guy like him walk for nothing. The Vikings got a decent deal for Moss a couple years ago.

Run defense will improve by adding better depth/talent at DT, and keeping Beason/Harris healthy. If that happens, we can be a top-10 run defense, even with a Suggs at DE.

I'm having a hard time believing the team needs to change their defensive scheme. It's not perfect, and we did slip late in the year. I attribute that to the talent level. Lucas has aids, Godfrey made some rookie mistakes, both DT's were down late.

I think playcalling/concepts can change. Gameplanning can change. But their overall scheme (zone, cover 3, etc) may not. We need to be prepared for that reality, and hope the overall talent level improves in 2009.

To lose a Peppers is a true loss, but to suggest we abandon our scheme because he feels he's too restricted is a bad idea.
