David didn't even go through the process. He took the first offer for reasons stated above. TOB mentioned him playing OG, when he wants to play OT.

That's great for him. At least his parents will get some level of satisfaction when their son goes 0-5 (assuming he redshirts) against TOB. Course, not that Butch will be there for all those losses.

not sure if NC State fans remember or even read this, 2 sides to each story just like the scholarship turn out will be - proof O'Brien isn't the saint NC State fans want to make him out to be.

Former Boston College safety Ryan Glasper went undrafted last weekend. On the surface, it’s not much of a story. Plenty of players were not picked up by NFL teams and had to go the free agent route. However, according to Glasper, his career was derailed by NC State coach Tom O’Brien. The story has been bubbling on the local level in Boston, but ESPN’s Alan Grant wrote the most detailed piece to date on Page 2. A quick synopsis: As coach at BC, O’Brien promised Glasper a medical redshirt last April after hip surgery, but Glasper never got the redshirt and was forced to play hurt his senior year. Glasper’s issue with O’Brien began after the Eagles lost to NC State on the Daniel Evans to John Dunlap Hail Mary, the 4th game of the season. If you remember the early book on BC, their secondary was getting criticism as the weakest part of the defense. According to the story, O’Brien was upset that the breakdown occured at Glasper’s position and sought out the injured player.

“How’s your hip?” he asked.

“It’s coming along,” Glasper replied.

“You’d better hurry your ass up,” O’Brien said. “Because you only have eight games left in your college career.”

“I’m redshirting,” Glasper said.

“No, you’ve been cleared by the doctor to play,” O’Brien said. “You’re choosing not to play. I hold the keys to what you do. We don’t have to grant you a fifth year. Besides, I can’t count on you.”

O’Brien declined to talk with ESPN, so the quotes are from Glasper’s version of events. In fact, the senior was so upset he told ESPN, “…when he said all that, I just wanted to punch that dude.” He went on to say:

Looking back I think he already knew he was going somewhere else. So I guess he needed the defense to be intact that season. I won’t dwell on it, but I trusted him. And he could have f—– up my career.

Understandable, especially when you consider one doctor had performed the surgery, but a different physician, Dr. Diane English (a BC team doctor), was the one who had supposedly given clearance. However, Glasper never got anything in writing and it was more of a gentleman’s agreement between coaches and player. Glasper essentially played the rest of the season on one leg until the Meineke Car Care Bowl against Navy, he had 10 tackles, and popped up on the All ACC Team honarable mention.

Now, this has caused a bit of a stir on the eBays. NC State fans are quick to point out the one-sided angle of the story, where Glasper is the victim of a win-at-all-costs coach, and obviously come to the defense of their new coach. Boston College fans, who are equal parts bitter and glad to see O’Brien go, have nothing but sympathy for Glasper. Obviously the laundry is going to shape the opinion of the story, as is the case in most college news. Even ESPN-hating got into the mix thanks to the AOL FanHouse floating the idea that the world wide leader buried the story because O’Brien has a daughter who works for the network. On the other end of the spectrum, the N&O followed up on the story and got a different tone from Glasper (originally posted on ACC Now, but the post vanished).

I have no animosity toward Coach O’Brien. I’m not bitter about anything or have any hatred. He’s a good coach, a phenomenal coach. I understand what he did. From a coach’s perspective, he did what he thought was best for the team. Maybe he knew that it would be his last year at BC and wanted it to be the best year it could be.

From my point of view, this falls under the “football is a tough business” category. One must consider that Glasper’s story isn’t uncommon, and coaches are in the business of winning. Unfortunate? Yes. Something more at work? No. O’Brien had to make a decision based on need, and coaches have to make the hard choice and play injured players all the time.

I read originally when he put it on PP. Thought of it no more than a post from a long time poster. His kid went to UNC because NC State(obviously never offered)I also remember MANY POSTERS wanting TOB to offer. I mean he was a sure thing right??He grew up a Wolfpacker. Well he DID NOT offer (TOB knows more bout FB prospects than message board guy or recruiting rankings guy) and thats why you have him. I never took it as an "apology" for a kid going somewhere he was offered a scholly . Just took it as an explanation.... But spin it however you want.

 

Seriously guys, why oh why are you arguing about high school recruits ? These little 5 star-4 star-3 star ratings these kids have when they come out of HS are complete jokes. Just wait until they are around Juniors in college, and we see who really has talent. Arguing about recruiting classes is like arguing who has the best uniforms.

 

Will you post the same sort of stories for the 15 kids who have busted their butts for UNC for 3-4 years only to be kicked out of the program because Davis found some half-brain academic reject with 4 stars!!!

 

I disagree. He knew he and his son were going to take grief over the situation so he explained it. He also put life in general in perspective, I thought it was a well written letter from a fan, alumni and parent.
