We found the answer on a page entitled, "What's a Hokie?" It turns out a Hokie isn't anything at all, and has nothing to do with that orange and maroon bird mascot. It's a made-up word that was added to an 1896 football cheer by a student named O.M. Stull, simply because it sounded good. It wound up becoming the nickname for all Virginia Tech teams. Out of curiosity, we tried to find out more about Stull and his famous cheer. This time, we went to Virginia Tech's main page and searched on "What is a Hokie." The first result gave us exactly what we were looking for. For your added enjoyment, here's the Old Hokie cheer:

    Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
    Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
    Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
    Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia.
    Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

The word Hokie, which originated from the Old Hokie spirit yell, penned in 1896, is often used interchangeably with "Fighting Gobblers" to refer to sports teams, fans, students, or alumni. The official university school colors - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - also were introduced in 1896. The colors were chosen by a committee because they made a 'unique combination' not worn elsewhere at the time.[1] The mascot is the HokieBird, a turkey-like creature. The teams were originally known as the "Fighting Gobblers," and the turkey motif was retained despite the name change.

In Stull's original version of Old Hokie, several words were spelled differently including "Hokie" itself:

    Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
    Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
    Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
    Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia.
    Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

The current version adds the 'e' to Hokie, takes off the 'S' from Tech and Polytech, and also adds "Team! Team! Team!"

    Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi
    Tech, Tech, V-P-I
    Sol-A-Rex, Sol-A-Rah
    Poly-tech Virgin-i-a
    Ray, Rah, V-P-I
    Team! Team! Team!

Did you know that a 'Nitty Lion' is actually named after a cougar the prowls near by Mt. Nitty?
