nothing new here really. Also, Redman stepped in and did OK but couldn't make a squad in years. We're comparing to a guy who made a Pro Bowl and started in the league for years. I'd have to see defenses adjust to a guy before I'd call them equal, plenty of players have looked respectable for a few games and it doesn't make them anywhere near starter quality.

In page after page, and this will go all the way back to the first part of this thread in 2004, is that there have been at most a couple picks and a couple FAs that became legitimately, consistently better. If we can do better, then let's do better, because we can do better - teams just don't let those guys get out.

And no, I don't feel like platooning or throwing fifty veterans at the problem and letting them go once they start playing worth a damn in hopes the next one might. There really aren't a hundred guys I'd trust with this franchise that are readily available.

I have been irrefutably proven to be the absolute best at evaluating internet message board tools, and there are at least 100 better than any of you here.

 

You mean like Jake Delhomme from 1997 through the last two games of 1999? Jake made a Pro Bowl because it was a weak year in the NFC and he was throwing to Steve Smith. Over a full season he has never had a quarterback rating above 88.1, which is just average for quarterbacks of this era, most of whom don't have a Steve Smith. QB rating isn't the end all and be all of passing statistics, but lots of guys have had at least one season of 90+. Shit, Matt Cassel hadn't started a game since high school but he had a QB rating of 89.4 this season. Is Cassel a great quarterback? No. Should he be given a big contract? No. There are 100 other guys as good or better than Matt Cassel, he's just decent and had the fortune to play with a lot of talent around him.

Several career backups emerge every season and post solid numbers when given a chance. The difference is that most organizations don't make P.R. decisions and give those guys a huge contract to stay as a starter. Again, Delhomme went undrafted for a reason, he has bad mechanics, he's not accurate, and he makes dumb decisions with the ball under pressure. Those are facts.
