It wouldn't have been a big win if we go by rankings as the two teams were basically evenly ranked. It would of been a good win for the conference more from a PR perspective than anything else.

Uh... because beating #6 helps Dayton's RPI after you play Xavier, especially if you beat them. It's good for the league as a whole. You get partial credit (kind of) for what your opponents do. You should never root against conference teams or opponents on your schedule when they can help you out by winning games not involving you. You always want your opponents as hyped as possible when they play you, so can get extra credit when you beat them. Never good to beat a team and have your RPI drop because they are poop.

    That's just silly.

Really not trying to be a dick by saying this, but you must not follow college hoops at all. It would have been a huge win for Xavier, and more importantly and noticably, the Atlantic10. And hoopsradio summed up why you want your opponents to do well. I've seen plenty of 22+ win teams left out of the tourney because their opponents didn't have good seasons.

I understand your argument about hating them bc they are a rival, but you should still want your conference to do well, especially against a hyped and storied ACC program such as Duke.

I always hated Cinci like hell when we were in CUSA together. I hated Huggins, I hated their thug players, I hated everything about that God-forsaken school. But I always wanted them to win their OOC games, because I wanted Cinci to be hyped and ranked as high as possible when they came to Halton to get their asses kicked.

Anyways, I'm sure we'll just agree to disagree..

    I'm with outofstate.

I don't pull for UNC to win.

I don't pull for Georgia to win either.

When you have to rely on RPI most years to get in the Tournament it makes you think a little differently. UNC/Duke usually doesn't have to worry about RPI due to its win totals and conference affiliation so I can where you would agree with OOS.

Oh, no doubt. There are certainly good reasons for him to pull for the A10 as a whole. I just wouldn't give him shit for not doing it. Sports rooting is often nonsensical anyway.

This is a really good point. Teams like Duke and UNC will always have phenomenal RPI's. In the A10, we might have two or three top 40 RPI teams each year, so big wins are great for the league. X beating Duke and Butler would have been awesome for the A10 and Butler.

However, I know what it's like to hate in-state rivals though, and I don't blame you for pulling against a team you hate outofstate.

I used to even pull for Cinci when we were in CUSA together. Cinci would beat up on the acc teams in non-conference play and then lose to Charlotte in conference play. The story was usually on page 8 in the local newspaper.

    Duke basketball to report violation
    By Ken Tysiac

    Posted: Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008

Duke athletics officials have initiated a self-report to the NCAA over associate head basketball coach Chris Collins’ impermissible attendance Friday at the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational high school tournament.

Friday was the final day of the Dec. 24-26 recruiting “dead period,” during which NCAA rules prohibit college coaches from attending high school games. Collins was at Broughton High’s Holliday Gymnasium as featured games included Ravenscroft-Apex and Word of God-Rocky Mount.

“Obviously he would not have been there if he had known it was a dead period,” said Jon Jackson, Duke’s associate athletics director for communications.

Jackson said the school’s NCAA compliance staff has been informed of the violation and was beginning the process of reporting the violation to the NCAA.

When schools become aware of violations, they typically notify the NCAA and propose self-imposed sanctions. The NCAA often classifies inadvertent violations as “secondary” rather than “major,” and then imposes sanctions, but it’s never clear how the NCAA will rule until it issues its judgment.

In the case of isolated improper recruiting contacts or evaluations of players, the NCAA often reduces the number of recruiting contacts or player evaluations a school can make in a future year.

It’s not clear when Duke will formally submit its report to the NCAA or when the NCAA will respond to Duke’s report. Typically schools inform the NCAA immediately when a violation occurs, then interview the party or parties involved at length before sending a comprehensive report to the NCAA.

Forward Ryan Kelly, a senior who has committed to Duke, plays for Ravenscroft. Word of God’s roster includes John Wall, the top uncommitted point guard in the current senior class.
