Not in the late fifties when Oscar Robertson was there, so if they were, it was a damn long time ago.

Maybe he's referring to Xavier. They used to be called the Ohio State University of Xavier in Cincinnatti or OSUXC for short. Printing school staitionary almost broke the budget so they just shortened it to Xavier.

I just think University of of Charlotte or Charlotte University has more of an identity than just another faceless cog in the UNC system. Most everyone recognizes UNC-Ch as UNC, and I have no qualm with that, but it makes the other schools seem secondary to it and they shouldn't. The state should realize that by giving each school their own identity it'll only make them stronger and a more attractive option to students.

I agree with this statement. many universities in the UNC system have their own names and it seems to work great for them (Appalachian, Western, ECU, etc)

No, it's always been the University of Cincinnati.

I dont see why it matters or what the difference is. (UNC-) Charlotte is still apart of the UNC System and will always be the University of North Carolina at Charlotte unless they decided to withdraw from the UNC System entirely and become a private university. IMO, that would be a bad decision because they would lose a big amount of state funding.

Besides, UNC-Asheville uses "Asheville" on their jerseys and still is known, institutionally, as UNC-Asheville. They took Charlotte's lead on that.

I don't think that they would have to withdraw from the UNC system. ECU is a part of the UNC system, as is Appalachian and Western.

You are correct. We can remove the "UNC" from our name and still be a part of the university system.
