2 year old Maxtor 3200 died. Still have a light but computer doesn't see it anymore. Uninstalled driver and rebooted it so it could reload and still nothing. Anyone know of a way to get files off of it? I have around 5 gig of music that I really don't want to get out and get again.

In the mean time went out and bough a Seagate 500 gig external.

I'm having the exact same problem with my Maxtor external drive, except the computer's different from the one I had when I loaded the Maxtor. The Maxtor was loaded on a Compaq, now I've got a Dell. I can't even get past the introductory page of the software disc. Beats me if it's Maxtor's or Dell's fault. It's a pisser having a bunch of shit in memory and not able to access it.

Mine is a 3200 200 gig memory (I think). It gives me a Code 10 on Device manager. I have tried as much as I know to do. Thankfully I used it as a backup only as I still have important stuff like photos and finance stuff on the desktop as well as burned to CDs but not the music. The new Seagate (also made by Maxtor or vice versa :rolleyes2:)I bought has a 5 year warranty but what good is a warranty if it dies? They give you another drive but the data. They say they have a recovery service that may be free but I have a bunch of downloaded music on it so I guess I should just be pissed. I was wondering if someone here knew of a way to go in to the drive and get it?

Any hard drive can go bad, but I've had a LOT of problems with Maxtors. Generally I've had best results with Western Digital and Seagate, but that's just me personally. I'm sure others may like some other drives as well.

Yep, I felt pretty good it being only 2 years old and was basically only for backups of important stuff on the desk top. Funny thing is the hard drives in the desktop are both 3 years old verses the 2 year old external drive :56:. Anyway replacement music is slowly coming back and I am going to start burning them as MP3 onto DVD

it depends on if the disk will still spin. Something you can try that's easy though is to put the drive in an antistatic bag, and then put it in the freeze over night. they can work for a little while after that sometimes
