you talk about greed, but as a whole, Christians give more of themselves (money, time volunteering to help others) than non-Christians.

If Christians are greedy, as you've asserted, what do that make non-Christians?

The answer to what the purpose of religion may or may not be depends largely on how one defines "religion", IMHO.

It was actually just a discussion. You know, where people talk about varying viewpoints and the ideas behind them instead of being overly concerned about being right or wrong.

Of course, she sees things from the viewpoint of her daily experience in a fairly small community with a fairly homogenous religious perspective.

In the context of the conversation, I'd define religion as a set of principles and morals with defined practices that reflect a belief in a supernatural or external cosmic power.

I don't really think that's very accurate. I've never been asked if I was a Christian whenever I've donated money, done community work or volunteered. So how would they track that?

I know some organized religious groups that do a lot of volunteer work but they don't require you to be a christian to help or to donate.

Usually, people that really help out other people don't even want any recognition. Most don't give a damn what you want to label them, they just want to help.

Are you speaking from your own "christian" experience?
