so Tyrod Taylor played last year as a true freshman, right? this year Coach Beamer announces that Taylor will redshirt. Now Beamer pulls the redshirt and announces Taylor will play. was this a coach's decision or a player demand? did I miss anything ? please explain.

In college ball in 2008, is the dog wagging the tail or the tail wagging the dog?

The short version: Glennon sucks. Beamer made a mistake.

Yep. Just last week Taylor was all set to redshirt and then the ECU game and BLAMMO, no more redshirt. Beamer wanted to give Taylor a year to develop but has now realized they will lose to the ECUs of the world with Glennon. The word on local radio is the locker room wanted Taylor but you know how talk radio goes. I do know that when the announcement last week came out about redshirting Taylor most VTech fans weren't to thrilled.

They wanted to redshirt Taylor this year because the coaching staff felt he needed to learn the playbook more. Last year he was thrown into the fire because of Glennon sucked and the coaching staff needed to find an answer. VT knew they would have a down year and so would the rest of the Coastal Division. They were predicted to win the division easily so hoping Sean Glennon could lead the way and win their divison and maybe get a win in the ACC Championship game.

NC State has the same QB issues like we all discovered against USC. The injury to Wilson and Evans being the worst QB in the ACC, they are looking to burn the redshirt of Matt Glennon because we need someone to get us some wins. The second string QB Harrison Beck is worse as Evans, which is hard to believe. If Evans sucks this week against William & Mary, I think TOB will burn Glennon's redshirt and he will be starting in week 3.

So is a Red Shirt is like a coaches contract? It can be terminated at any given time? Does the NCAA have to approve a red shirt. If so, do they have to agree to terminate a red shirt or is all that just an institution decision?

I saw a Post reporter on MASN say it was gonna be Glennon a day before it was announced. I was… surprised. They are panicking right now. We were/are gonna lose to the ECU’s of the world this year anyway. We lost a shitload of people and ECU returned a bunch that gave us fits last year. That’s not an excuse either because I don’t think this was any fluke. We made some early mistakes but ECU gave us two TD’s. It might’ve been a real beatdown if we hadn’t gotten those. Check out the stats and pbp:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/ncaa/playbyplay/2008/08/30/38685_pbp.html

35 carries, 104 yards. 2nd and goal from the 4 in the first quarter and we can’t run it in. Can’t run and can’t pass. Taylor’s not going to solve all of that.

ECU should beat State. UVa will be better by the time they play so I’m not sure there.

They showed a close-up of Evans on the sideline last week. How is it possible he looks much younger and smaller than he did last year?

why announce a redshirt in the first place?

why is there a need or desire by a coach to announce that a certain player is being redshirted? why not just see how things go with the team and then make a decision later to play or not play the kid? If things go well for the team with the player redshirted, then that's great. If not, then just play the guy if you as a coach so desire to. Then you wouldn't look like egg on your face.

don't this sort of make Beamer look bad?? couldn't TOB at NCSU have gotten by without announcing plans to redshirt Glennon?

Redshirts are totally at the discretion of the team. Redshirt players can be on travel rosters and keep their redshirt as long as the don't play. Many are brought along as an insurance policy in case of injury.

Interesting story. In 93 when I was at Duke we had a redshirt player travel to Virginia later in the season and we got in a bench clearing brawl. The redshirt player got ejected from the sideline. That was considered having participated in the game and he lost his redshirt because of that even though he did not technically play.
