I get the sense that I should feel proud or giddy or something, but honestly I don't really have a reaction. Obviously I'd rather see America win than not, but it wouldn't have bothered me if Spain won and I'm don't find myself caring all that much that the U.S. did. I think the media is making too much out of this. Given the circumstances, winning men's volleyball was much more significant and yet received less than a tenth of the coverage. Basketball just isn't more important than those other sports in my view.

Basketball is just well known to more people internationally...which matters.

If that were the determining factor, then wouldn't Olympic soccer have gotten a lot more coverage? I think it came down the NBA having a business relationship with ESPN.

Maybe the reason soccer isn't as big at the Olympics is the nations don't send their best teams while in basketball they do. The soccer heavyweights save up for the World Cup. If nations sent their best soccer teams I have a feeling soccer would get A LOT more attention. Maybe not in the US of course, but around the world definitely.

Olympic soccer gets vastly more coverage overseas than Olympic basketball does (though not in all countries). I was just pointing out that Savio's rationalization didn't ring true.

You're right. Like I said at the beginning of the thread, when China and the USA faced off, it was the most watched basketball game in the 117 year history of the sport. And with all the drama USA Basketball has had since 2002, it was more compelling than volleyball. Although winning the volleyball gold was impressive and it made for great games with the murder of the coach's father, people just have more interest in basketball....Unless you live in an area where volleyball is a big deal.

I watched both games and they were equally impressive. USA Basketball with the near collapse and USA Volleyball with the come from behind win after being down one set. Even USA Water Polo was great to watch in reaching the gold medal games for both men and women.

I can understand why a targeel fan would not be excited about this. Duke coach and player succeeding where tarheel coaches and players failed

Jesus Collin, did you even watch the game?

Why is no one talking about one of the best international basketball games I've ever seen?

It's obvious you didn't watch the game.
