ya know, reading the ap article on this, it's pretty misleading. we all know about the bright incident. then there's the houston game where he kicked the guy. but that guy was twisting smith's ankle. i'm really surprised more wasn't made about that part of it when that happened.

but the ap article is talking about numerous timely penalties involving smith. i don't remember every penalty ever, but the one in houston is the only one that comes to mind.

smitty's getting a really bad rap out of this. he's not innocent, but he's not a habitual troublemaker.

Grabbing the ref vs Dallas was pretty noteworthy.

yeah, i had forgotten about that. that was one of those, rules are rules. not like he grabbed the ref in an aggressive manner.

about him and deangelo, i think smith didn't have any intentions of fighting there. i think he knew what he was doing.

jeez, when did i become such a smitty apologist?

If it had come blows (say Hall clocks Smitty) would you be blaming the victim because he kept talking?

the ref thing was a shit call. But yeah, Smith is volatile.

The Hall thing actually works in his favor. Here's a guy who he goaded into being the agressor, whereas the old school Smitty that checked back in this week probably would've just fucking buried the guy. Certainly though, he was being manipulative and instigating.

ON the field is different, though. Equal standing. The idea of Lucas being on his knees while they're jawing clearly puts Lucas at a position of disadvantage and certainly not of trying to escalate.

A guy at work was trying to tell me that maybe Lucas threw the first punch - from his knees. That didn't make any sense.

possibly, but that's part of the game. trying to get your opponents head out of it.

i can't imagine in training camp trying to do that when both of you are starters.

    that's a good point though. i guess i'm a huge apologist.

Honestly, if Wahle and the refs hadn't been there to get between them I'm sure it would have come to blows. Hall's had his share of fights in TC.

Yeah, no one can or should defend Smith here. Because violently attacking unprepared teammates is a pattern of behavior for him, there can be no legitimate excuses. I think that even the people trying to brush it off by pointing to training camp fights know what bullshit that is. Steve Smith is a problem, and unfortunately there's no easy answer here. If we can't even put moral responsibility above wanting to win games, I can't imagine that the team will.

It sounds childish, but maybe they could have Smith keep away from the team whenever possible. He could eat meals by himself, stand on the other side of the field when not participating in practice, and otherwise be reminded that he is not a part of the team. That seems like a way of hurting his pride and constantly reminding him that his own behavior has separated him from his teammates.
