when shit like this happens, part of me thinks that the person who is suspended should be suspended as long as the other person is out of action.

kinda like that guy that punched the other hockey guy in the back of the head and fell on him and broke that guys neck. he should be out as long as the hurt guy.

    that shit sounded stupid.

Wasn't Smitty "covering" camp for the NFL Network? I bet THAT coverage just got a LOT more interesting.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Not only that, Sirius NFL Radio is covering Panthers camp on Monday (8/4) with their primo air team -- Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan.

In all seriousness, I want to know what Lucas did or said. He and Smitty have been teammates for 5 years now, going against each other frequently in practice, camp, and OTAs. I've never, never heard of a problem between them until yesterday.

There has GOT to be more to this story than we're getting. And I, for one, am gonna withhold judgment until I hear [paulharvey] "the rest of the story." [/paulharvey]

Yeah let's cut Smith. Maybe we can get Colbert cheap and and since
Farve is coming back maybe we can get Raymond Berry to come back
to. Smith doesn't take any shit from anyone. To bad our fans are willing
to throw him under the bus without knowing what lead to this flair up.

Gastonia Gazette's Steve Reed is calling for a maximum 4 game suspension.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — By losing his temper Friday, wide receiver Steve Smith may have delivered a costly blow to the Carolina Panthers’ playoff hopes in 2008 before the season even begins.
Any coach will tell you how hard it is to win a game in the NFL, and now Smith just made it that much harder.
Under the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Panthers can, and should, suspend Smith a maximum of four games.
For Smith, that means he’d lose $411,000 of his $1.75 million base salary in 2008. And he~could be required to reimburse the team 25 percent of his 2008 signing bonus allocation. Even worse, he could face a civil suit if his victim Ken Lucas were unable to play football for any length of time.
But coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney stand to lose even more than that — perhaps their jobs.
Everyone knows the Panthers are in need of a winning season, which means Smith has just tossed the two men who trusted him the most, Fox and Hurney, into a precarious no-win situation.
If they suspend Smith, the chances of the Panthers getting off to a rough start this season increase dramatically. They face San Diego, Chicago, Minnesota and Atlanta in September.
But if Fox doesn’t suspend Smith, he’ll instantly lose credibility with~his players. If you think that’s not a concern then explain why Fox needed to tell his team after practice that retaliation for the fight is not an option.
Think about it, if you don’t discipline Smith now then how can you discipline anyone else in the future?
In the end, the Panthers have to do what is right, and that is suspend Smith for four games, no matter how much it hurts. They have to show who’s in charge and not allow the superstars, no matter how much they’re paid, to run the team.
A year ago, the Panthers suspended offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges for two games for pointing a gun at a stripper.
    Tell me, which is worse?
Anything less than a four-game suspension is cowardly.
There will be some who defend Smith by saying these things happen all of the time in practice. But that’s not true. This wasn’t in the heat of battle. In fact, this wasn’t much different than Smith’s film room attack on Anthony Bright in 2002.
Like Bright, Lucas was an unsuspecting victim. He -- was kneeling on the ground when Smith sucker-punched him. Oh, and by the way, Lucas didn’t have his helmet on.
If that doesn’t qualify as~conduct detrimental to the team then I don’t know what does. For years the Panthers have been coddling their superstar, and that can’t happen any longer.
    Smith deserves the maximum penalty.

The unfortunate part is that action comes at the expense of the front office and coaches, his teammates and
the fans. Hey, if the Panthers start the season 1-3 or 0-4, you have Steve Smith to blame, folks
