a LOT of people actually. You did remember to install ALL other Microsoft updates before installing SP3 didn't you?

Hard to say. I installed it after I had to reinstall my OS, so it was there amongst a ton of other updates. But I installed it in the order Microsoft gave it to me. :2:

Microsoft is stupid. When it gives you the option to choose "Install SP3" or "Install other updates" Go keep getting the other updates until you can't find anymore. THEN you can install sp3.

that's so not true, and it never has been in the history of all service packs from MSFT. There have been relatively rare cases of an earlier SP being needed before the lastest SP, but you definitely don't need a fully patched SP2 environment to put SP3 on a box.

I'd be willing to bet I've done 100x more. You're stepping up to the wrong guy on this one.

please explain how you've done it 100 times more? Short of you developing it. Which you aren't that smart.

Like I've said.... seen it first hand. I KNOW what I'm talking about.

You said you've done a few systems this way. I regularly deploy SPs and many other updates to 100,000 systems. This is not new stuff to me, I'm not pulling this out of my butt. If you've seen something different in a small scale, just a few systems, it might have something to do with those systems or something the people you know or you do to in the upgrade process, but I've done it PLENTY without needing to apply 50 other updates first.

I think you know where I work, so "short of you developing it" and "you aren't that smart" don't apply. I am that smart, and I take part in developing it ALL THE TIME.

    And I'm spent.

Ignoring the rest of this thread, which is pointless drivel, yes, there are some problems. Like in all SPs, you have to be sure that your apps are compatible. I've seen issues with 3rd party firewalls, AV software, VPN software, etc. Even sound drivers from flaky 3rd parties (not the big vendors). Some SPs don't touch as much as others and therefore have fewer compat issues, and MSFT does everything possible to address these ahead of time, but even the insanely ridiculous amount of testing that MSFT does misses a lot of stuff.

Meanwhile, Vista SP1 is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Go figure.
