If you got is a little over a year ago, and you got a service agreement with it, the maker will just replace the hard drive.

And if it's a Dell, PM me the asset tag and I'll look it up for you.

I was checking my mails and wrongly installed some exe in mail which had the subject "you have received an email from your family member" and suddenly after I clicked the exe, my system showed me a blue screen with some messages which I was unable to read and rebooted. When I diagnosed it said "DST Short State test Test Reset failure MSG: Unit 0 IDE status failed Status byte = 64 control code = 1 error code 1000-0146 my service tag is 1V19J1S Please tell me if you have any solution."

Its still a hard drive error. It was a mistake to install the exe. That'll get you in trouble a lot, but you need a new HD.

Newbie here! I am getting the exact same problem, so even though it is a hard drive problem, is it expensive to purchase a new one and is anyone aware of a step by step guide to installing it? Is it possible to also retain any data on the current hard drive aswell? Cheers :)

    Not that expensive.

Find the computer model documentation online for help on installing the drive.

Might want to consider a USB case so you can attach the old drive to your newly rebuilt system for data recovery. Worth a shot, anyway. If you get the data off, chuck that old drive and get an new external USB drive and start backing up your data periodically.
