Yikes. Neither of those is good! I'm glad you went to the doctor when you did.

I've seen a lot of this over the last year and they keep getting more frequest. First off, it's not a brown recluse bite. They look like that initially then the area begins to get necrotic. So if it were a bown recluse bite, you'd know it by now.

I have a co-worker and a friend that both had things that looked just like that and they both thought it was a spider bite- it turned out to be MRSA in both cases. And I've found that people that have had one case of MRSA have episode after episode of it in the future.

The only way you can tell for sure is to have the drainage cultured. If it's draining, keep it covered; do everything possible to protect your eyes from the drainage and don't expose your girlfriend.

If it is MRSA, they are having good luck with Septra/Bactrim which is pretty cheap.

With MRSA, the sore area is there for a few days before it gets red and irritated.

I had one patient that had a spot on the back of his calf. He went to the doctor and they thought it was just some kind of minor skin infection and they put him on Keflex. He stayed on it 10 days and it didn't help. I had to clean the wound every night and he (the patient) would push on the area (which is not a good idea but the patient had some psych issues) and puss would spray a foot. It was disqusting. They finally cultured it; it showed MRSA and after 3 days on the Septra/Bactrim, it was 100 times better.

Dude gave me a Bactrim presciption but told me not to fill it until today because he thought it may go away by then. It hasn't, but it doesn't look any worse. It's itchy, though. I'll go get that bitch filled this afternoon. It's probably MRSA. Where the hell does that come from?

Yeah, start the Bactrim! It's not gonna hurt you unless you're allergic to Sulfa-based drugs.

I don't know where it comes from. But it's getting to epidemic proportions in the US. Remember- if it starts to drain, keep it covered and wash the hell out of your hands after you mess with it.

Also, while you are on Bactrim, drink a few extra glasses of water a day. It goes thru the kidneys and can set up crystal deposits in them if you are dehydrated.
