Just curious, do locations (e.g. hotels, cafes) that offer free wi-fi typically use cable internet connections? If so, I imagine they'd have to either dump the 'free' wi-fi or raise their prices on other products/services to compensate.

I would imagine that they do, but they would presumably have business accounts, so these rules probably wouldn't apply.

You can't really compare a small asian country's infrastructure to ours as far as broadband, but yes, our network topology leaves a lot to be desired. We are quickly moving to the slowest, yet most expensive broadband coverage in the world. Stuff like this won't help. I'd sooner switch back to dial-up and save cash as a 40 GB cap doesn't really allow me to d/l anything of substance. Everyday usage will push that cap, and I don't pay $50 a month just to surf.

The article stated DSL isn't set up the same as cable. I know online gaming suffers from DSL primarily the upload part but how is downloading music and movies on DSL different? Do you get similar speeds downloading?

Is there anyway an individual can tell how much he downloads (pages, music etc..) in a given period of time

Not really, usually a fast DSL connection is about the same as a slow Cable connection. Of course primarily your roadblock is going to be whatever site you are d/l from. A 768kb/s DSL line is pretty good, but that's considered road-runner-lite by TWC standards.

As far as tracking your own downloads, I'm sure there is some program that could track that for you but I don't know of any right off hand. Like the article states, soon you'll be able to log into TWC's website and check what they think you have used.

I bet T/W will set up a site so that you can keep track of your usuage, similar to SunCom's giving you access to track cell minutes.

768 kbps is ultra lite, lite is 1.5 megs. In Durham, standard is 7 megs and turbo is 10.
