I feel that the Panthers have gotten bigger and stronger on the offensive line. What do you guys think about the guard position?

    Last Year was:
    Wahle:304
    Bridges:326

    Projected 2008:
    Wharton: 312
    Vincent/Brown/Fonoti: 325-340

To me, when you look at it like this, the G position doesn't seem to be that drastically larger than before. Saying they picked up Vincent/Brown/Fonoti gives the impression but unless one of those guys beats out Wharton for LG or Wharton stays at LT I don't see all the fuss.

I kinda wonder if Wharton isn't a little bit bigger than 312

They added guys who are big for depth and drafted one of the biggest right tackles available. They are moving in that direction. Our guards may not be a lot bigger than last year, depending on how big Fonoti is and whether he gets to start, but our right tackle and our depth got a lot bigger.

They did add guys who don't fit what Fox had previously looked for, but I'm waiting to see whether or not they actually end up starting. Who was the big guard everyone was talking about last off-season who didn't even end up making the team? In any case, Wharton is a solid pass protector but just not strong enough with in-line blocking to be much of an asset there. I've said before that it looks like we're almost setting up the left side of the line for maximum pass protection and the right side for run blocking. At minimum it looks like we've added some quality depth at guard, and yes, those guys generally are beefier and hopefully will make more of an impact in the run game.

I am not sure that Wharton will be an upgrade on Wahle. I suspect that whoever starts at right guard will be better than anyone we had their last year. If Otah pans out he should be an upgrade on Gross in the run game but probably not as good in the passing game.

I still see a good chance that Wharton slides back to LT in 2009 and Gross walks.

    I've thought that too.

I've definitely thought Gross could be allowed to leave.
