I've got ants nesting amongst my cantaloupe plants. They're nesting under one of my irrigation cans, the hill is coming up and into one of the cans. How can I get rid of them? Is there a poison that won't hurt the plants and me?

I think all poisons are bad for you, hence the name.

Try an anteater. That should work.

cinnimon (sp) ya know, the spice, is effective for disrupting a nest, ants will not nest in moist ground, if you keep the ground wet, they will move and once away from the plants, you can use a varity of things, like simple green (cleaner) bleach, gasoline or spray's.....

What's odd is the ground was moist(watered the cantaloupes twice a day), but now the ants seem to be gone.

I'll keep that cinnamon trick in mind, thanks.

I think cinnamon goes better with cantoupe than grits, don't you? :)

Depends on the type of ant. Since you said there is a hill coming up onto one of your watering cans, my first thought is that they may be fire ants. If so, this might help.

If it's something else, just google for getting rid of ants in a garden. There's tons of info on the different species out there.

I poured a can of cinnamon all around the plants and down in the irrigation cans three days ago. There was just a slight sign of ant activity in one of the cans this morning. Since I used the cinnamon I haven't used the cans for watering, just watering topically. Anyhow, the ants seem to be subsiding.
    Thanks for the tip cheeze105.
