What if we took Otah at 13, and made the same trade with Philly to get Stewart? Would that be better, the same, or worse?

My guess is people would say worse, why would you give up a first, second, fourth for a position where you already spent a 1st on two years ago. Either way, we paid too much.

Otah was the last OT that was available that I'd really want to start.
Stewart may be a special back, but it would be far less necessary to watch him fall with others on the board and without "needing" a starter.

So it doesn't really change it, but Stewart we could live without easier. That was more the luxury.

I think Stewart woulda fallen to us in the second because of the concern about his injury.

Its possible the toe injury might put some teams off. But I honestly doubt he would have made it all the way to our second. You gotta figure we already had better info than anyone else on the injury and we still werent willing to risk losing him to Chicago, KC, ARZ or Detroit immediately after us. They must have had a strong feeling one of those were hot for him. Then when the run on RB really did start with Jones, Mendelhall and Johnson you'd have to figure Stewart was higher up the board on at least 2 of those teams. Dallas was probably gonna draft Felix reguardless. Then you have the Jets sitting right behind them who wanted McFadden early but settled for a TE late in round 1.

If we sat on our 2nd wed be looking at Forte or Rice at RB IMO.

If the reports are true that the panthers were on the phone trying to trade back up as soon as they selected Stewart you have to think that they wanted both of them and they thought Otah would last longer than Stewart giving them a better shot at getting both.

I also wonder if the Bears right behind us had taken the trade instead of the Eagles, how would the "draft chart" equal out and would people still say we payed too much. In my mind the Panthers think they got two guys worth at least the 13 and 14 picks.

i heard somewhere that they called every team trying to trade back up right after selecting Stewart, but it seems like I also heard something about the trade was in place the day before...

Gantt said we had a deal in place to trade down if we wanted, the day before. Mags speculated it was Philly.

Given the run on backs in the second half of the first round, so probably not, though you can never be certain. I don't know of anyone who didn't give him at least a first round grade. We would probably still be looking at taking a guy like Forte or Ray Rice. Which I would have been happy with as a compliment to DW.

    GBNREPORT: #8. Second back ranked.

    Kiper: #21 Fourth back ranked.

    Scout.com: #28 Fifth back ranked.

TFY: Mid-first round grade, third back ranked.

Scott Wright: #10, second back ranked.

Curtis Popejoy: #10, second back ranked.

Just on a quick search. That we went ahead and drafted Stewart now meant two things. One, they really think he's a guy we can build an offense around. Two, DW is a complimentary back at best. If they saw him as a starter, they don't make this move.

    maybe they'll compliment each other...

"Hey DW, I like how you hit that hole" "Thanks Stew baby, I just wish I could hit it as hard as you... by they way, you sure are looking mighty fine in those tight ass pants you're wearing. It shows off them bull legs"
