But it's the "chance" they are taking away. I see what you are saying, but taking away the possibility is not a good thing. If any other college student was offered the "chance" to become a millionaire before graduating, don't you think they'd jump at that chance. I know I would and would be allowed to. Besides, players can always "test" the waters and not sign an agent. I'm sure that drives coaches crazy though.

    Here's my beef with this:

Most people go to college to get a job, right? It's all under the guise of "getting an education", but you go to college so you can get a good job and not flip burgers.

People go to law school to be lawyers. They major in Computer Science so they can be a code monkey. They get an MBA so they can be middle management (lol).

Durants, Beasleys, Odens go to college to prepare for the NBA. They might need one year. Some (LeBron for instance) don't even need that.

I mean, hell, if Google wanted to hire some kid to write code for them right out of high school, nobody would bat an eye. (This is actually a bad analogy because Google pretty much *requires* at least a Bachelors before they will hire you, regardless of experience)

They need to go with the same system as baseball has. You can come out right out of high school if you want, but if you go to college, you can't leave until after your junior year. Also, schools should be allowed to buy insurance policies for players.

Agreed. For every Kobe and LaBron there are 2-3 players that are not ready in year one.

So the Kobes and LeBrons should suffer because there are stupid people out there?

The crux of the problem is with NCAA scholarships. If the NCAA wanted to help this problem, they wouldn't give an athlete the death-knell should he try to go to the pros right out of HS. Why not give the athlete a 2 year grace period to try the pros with no penalty to his eligibility for a scholarship?

Or, why not allow someone who got drafted and bust out in a year, pay for his own school and play in the NCAA next year while attending class?

The impetus to change isn't solely in the NBA's court, there is no reason imo the NCAA couldn't relax their rules regarding student-athletes. Better an athlete pay his own way with draft money rather than a booster pay.

Because the player would no longer be an amateur but a professional?

You just say that because Pittsburgh doesn't have an NBA team.

How much money is the NCAA losing when players leave early?
