If anyone has access to listen to the Herd on ESPN Radio - turn it on.
The truth about dook is being spoken as never before.

I'll try to sum it up -
    1) Several Gottlieb quotes - 'dook has been completely overrated this year. Overranked in the NCAA'. (When Dook was the #1 team in the country - 'If dook is the best team in the country, something is seriously wrong with college basketball...')
    2) Actual dookies (at least they said they were) calling in saying their recruiting efforts have been down over the last couple of years.
    3) Herd saying that dook basketball and Notre Dame football recruits are the most over-hyped recruits in the nation. If dook recruits a player, all of a sudden, they are McDonald's All Americans. Starters at dook transfer to other colleges and don't even start at their new schools.
    4) Herd also said that the fact that the dook players are heralded as 'athletes' is the worst characterization he's heard in athletics in recent years.

Just thought some of the comments were interesting. I hadn't considered the 'over-hyping' of dook recruits actually making them into McDonald's all americans.
(And for the record, if Herd had been discussing ANY team in the ACC, I would have posted it here.)

I think it's kinda funny how all the Dook fans criticized Sendek for depending on the 3-ball too much and they just watched their team crash and burn for the very same reason.

while i like Cowherd for the most part....I think a lot of this has to do with him garnering more east coast listeners.....he's a west coast guy and does the "Mysterious 1st hour" for the west coast people.....I think his east coast audience was lacking....and no better way to get it back than to bash Duke....its the norm nowadays.

Math, 1 season of "relying on the 3" does not equate to 10 years of Herb ball.

K played the hand he was delt, knew his post was lacking......Zoub got hurt and was out 4 weeks (which prob put him behind somewhat)....they were 20-10 last season, 28-6 this season.....

He's said that before, and for the most part, he's right. After the Shavlik Randolph ordeal I have stopped following recruiting reports.

He's starting about 3 minutes of comments by Gottlieb right now. So, most of the commentary is based on what Gottlieb said over the last day or so.

I understand that, but Sendek wasn't always dependent on the 3 just because he was stubborn about it. There were years when he didn't have a post player worth a damn.

Gottlieb nailed it on espn news. He started talking about Duke and how their defense reverted to the same old pressure D that they are famous for. The problem is, we don't have the personnel for that. That led to DeMarcus Nelson getting exposed as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year getting destroyed off the dribble constantly. Nelson had to switch to the quickest player as Paulus can't stay in front of anyone. This put the back part of the D in bad situations constantly eventually leading to wide open layups and offensive rebounds.

WVU outrebounded us by 20 thanks to this defensive strategy. Gottlieb openly wondered what happened to the sagging man and the 2-3 zone we exhibited to such strength in December. Our pressing D worked against an injured UNC team and we rode that into the ground, having it nearly cost us the game against Belmont.

Sad to see K fall into the same comfortable habits when it was obvious we didn't have the personnel to run that defense. The offense, too, was at least one spectacular shooter short. That led to Paulus (our best outside shooter) forcing shots early in the clock.

Hopefully next year is better but I'm not holding my breath.

Doug Gottlieb's comments (and I kinda agree with them):

    1) Coach K busy with Team USA and other 'outside' responsibilities, which leaves his assistants to hold down the fort.
    2) Coach K's assistants have done a poor job of picking recruits.
    3) 3 recruits in the last couple of years becoming McDonald's all americans after committing to duke - transferred to other smaller schools and still don't start. Casey Sanders as an example. (sorry - i didn't catch the other two names because I didn't recognize them.)

Herd says we should use the 'eyeball' way of judging a player and his eyeballs say that dook hasn't had the same caliber recruits as a Kansas or UNC or Texas over the last few years. Their recruits are more like Belmont recruits.
He also says it's hard for dook fans to hear, but it's true.
He says go watch ESPN Classic and watch Notre Dame and watch dook and those teams are much more talented 15 years ago than they are now.
Using the same argument, look at FSU football games, UNC basketball games - the talent level is similar today as it was 15 years ago.

Anyway, I see his point. I expect we'll start to notice a decline in the 'over-hyping' of notre dame football and dook basketball in the upcoming years as those teams appear to be on a bit of a downward spiral.
