Starting and carrying 25-30 times a game aren't the same. I'm not down on DW at all, and don't have a hard on for a big back for that matter.

edit: I don't think I said that right, that many carries is definitely starting, he can be the number 1 back without being the only one to get carries. I just don't want to see him be used up in two years.

It's still an issue until proven otherwise.

We've usually used two backs, big, small, whatever. People just want the big back because it sounds sexy- even though they'd likely bitch about being too conservative when we used him.

That is why we signed Toefield. He can spell DW and provide depth.

Hopefully he can spell more words than DW

No it doesn't. An RB starting on our own 20 could bust a 20 yard gain then back it up with 3 straight 1 yard gains. That's a 5.75 ypc average but we still punt. We only need 3.34 ypc but consistently. Foster was slightly more consistent than Williams over the last couple of years.

Any coach in the league would take a 5.0 ypc back especially over a 3.5.

YPC isn't the only measure of how good a RB is, Thelt. In 2006 Turner had a higher YPC than LT2, why wasn't he starting in 2007?

If you look at a guy like Barry Sanders it was that 1 carry out of 5 that made his YPC impressive. Williams has a similar M.O. in that he has that big gainer in his back pocket (NO! I am not saying he is the next Barry Sanders). Williams as a feature back will get more touches and thus more big runs, in theory.
Turner benefited from situational touches, but we'll see this year that he will be everything people thought he was.
Either way, even a feature back like LT needs a break and a team needs a solid #2 to handle some situational touches.

He was highly sought after and got a big fat contract. If not for LT's history of greatness he might have been replaced.....

When you draft a running back in the first round you really need to give him a shot at being your starter at some point. He has done nothing since he has been here to make anyone think he was not worthy of a first round pick.
