That quote kinda backs my thoughts - that they have great flexibility. If there's an early run on OT's, they don't have to reach. They can grab BPA ( which may not be RB ) and grab a tackle later. Or, if they get 'their guy', Wharton is a guard.

The whole point of this thread is not that Mendenhall is the answer, but that they have options because we have a starting oline in place. If they feel that they can't absolutely improve it in round one, they can work on depth ( or a lucky pick ) later on, and take BPA - which I don't think is going to be a lineman on either side of the ball. I think it's going to be a back, and we have a need for a back. Maybe not a round one need, maybe not a glaring need, but a need. And with 2005 fresh in their brains, I can see Hurfox thinking its a huge need.

I expect best available OT in the 1st round. If there's a huge disparity in value, the next pick would be a DT. If somehow all 1st round caliber OT and DT are gone, that'll free up one of the top DEs. That'll be what are options are draft day.
I expect a RB taken somewhere on the second day.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as they have two solid guards, the O-line will be improved. Whether they move Wharton to guard and draft a LT, or draft somebody like Brandon Albert, and put him at LG, I'll be happy.

This is also why I still believe that trading down in the first is a viable option. It's not out of the question that either Darren McFadden, or Matt Ryan could fall to 13, which would put us in a fantastic position for a trade.

I did. You started a thread saying why you thought the choice would be Mendenhall. Now you are saying it is about flexibility.

I agree, they don't have to reach. But, if the top 3 are gone, I still like Cherilus around there. I don't think he's bad value and the team has shown with guys like Beason, that if they find options, they might take those options (a la our 2nd round BPAs) but they also have a significant history of fixing value to meet the player they think is going to help us.

IMO, it's more likely that the BPA/need compromise is much closer to a DE.

This I disagree with. I'm not really happy with our theoretical starting 5 as much. Hangartner starts as of now, IMO, and I don't like that. If Wharton's inside, I'm fine with Vincent at the other guard, because he looks primarily like a run blocker, with a young player behind him (or behind Wharton), and then there's a hole at OT. If Wharton's outside, we have a hole. We really need a blue chip type player somewhere in that mix where the problem can at least have competition to get fixed. A Wharton/Hangartner/Kalil/Vincent/Gross quintet isn't satisfactory, to me.

I know they were all over Cherilus at the senior bowl. I could see them trading down in the first, or trading up in the second to get him.
