Didn't mastercard break records with their IPO earnings recently?

Yes, Visa's should be even bigger. The IPO is a great way to offset legal liabilities such as antitrust and unfair-pricing claims by retailers.

I'm far from an expert, but it sounds like it's gonna be pretty hard for regular investors to get in on it. And the entry point will be at around 22x earnings compared to Mastercard's 15x entry point (if what I've read is correct).

IPOs have never been for the "regular" investor have they?

Yeah, they offered it at $46 in May 2006 and now it's trading at around $200.

Visa also processes twice the amount of transactions that MasterCard does.

Starting April 1st Visa will start charging an international transaction fee of .08%. Currently they only charge a fee for currency conversion (1%). This applies to online purchases as well. Think about how many people buy things off ebay from individuals located in a different country or the amount of American tourists at any given time in Paris who carry their credit card because it is safer.

Pre-loaded gift cards are becoming very popular as well. I haven't seen statistics on them yet, but I would venture to say that more people now give them as gifts than write checks or give cash during the holidays.

How is VISA going to grow their business in the future? That would be a concern.

Come on. The more and more people move from checks and cash to plastic every day. That growth alone will sustain them for years.
