Is this a good deal on a lens?

I've read reviews and the lens kit I have got bad reviews.

 

I'd spend a little more and get this. It's not quite as long, but the IS is really helpful and it's a little higher quality glass. I have this lens and love it.

Regardless, you're still going to want to hold on to your kit lens as 28mm isn't very wide on a crop camera.

 

I've heard interesting things about this one too (it's 18-200) with IS, but I've never used it. Sigma is known for having a lot of lemons, but when you get a good one, they're supposed to be pretty good.

I think you'll be really happy with it. IT's a great "carry-around" lens. I did Disney with it (and only it) about this time last year and really enjoyed it. It's got it's limitations, but if I'm only carrying one lens it's usually that one.

Sigma has gotten better over the years. It's Tamron and Tokina I'd stay away from these days. Still don't always trust the Sigmas though. However I have their version of the 18-200 with the Sigma version of VR (IS on a Canon?) on a Nikon D80. I think Sigma has, or has had, about three different versions of this lens.

It's a sweet lens. My only gripe about it is the manual/AF function switch and the focus ring being out front. Sigma says don't try to manual focus while the lens switch is set to AF or bad things can happen. I've done it inadvertently and it will grind and crunch some. Nikon's version of the 18-200 will allow you to focus manually while in AF mode on the lens. The Nikkor 18-200 is really sweet and the version I'll get one of these days. The Sigma is nice though.

 

Damn this thing is huge!
