I assume you want something deeper than so I go to heaven when I die?

It is more than that to me. It defines who I am and how I look at the world. It gives things a purpose and meaning. I know why I am here and what I am supposed to do because of my salvation experience. Call it a crutch if you must but if your leg is broken you need a crutch and I believe all humans are broken and lost until they accept Christ.

IMHO, being saved is only the beginning of the big picture of being a Christian. It's an important piece, to be sure, but it's not the whole thing, or even most of it.

Heh, back in college I interned under an Episcopal Deacon who liked to really push my (then) Baptist theology. He would say something along the lines of "you believe in Jesus because you want to get to heaven. Well, what if there is no heaven or hell? Where would you be then?" He'd then go on to say he didn't believe in an afterlife, but was doing all he was doing because he followed Christ out of love, not out of what he could get from Christ (that is, fire insurance).

I think he actually believed in an afterlife, but was doing it more to make a point.

Of course, it may be helpful (or more confusing, perhaps) to ask, even before "why is salvation important" to ask "what is salvation?"

I think salvation is not just about heaven and hell. It is in part about that, but it is also, perhaps even moreso, about living in a way that reflects God's self-givingness, versus living just for ourselves and our own appetites.

Just an interjection from your neighborhood pagan

What I seek, & what I think I've always sought, is not "salvation." What I seek is understanding--to make sense of the world in general & my own life in particular. I almost said that what I seek is truth, & that's what I've always had in mind & wanted. I think in my "maturity" I'm just accepting that as an individual, I'm only capable of knowing a piece of the whole.
