Everybody wants to pick out the parts they don't like and throw them out. Some things do get taken out of context and quoted to further someone's agenda, our job (and I don't do it very well) is to study the truth and know what is not true when we are confronted with it.

I do accept it as God's word. But some parts make sense and others don't. It doesn't make sense to me that sins are choices people make but homosexuality is a sin.

Take parts of the Old Testament, for instance. There are parts of the Old Testament where God orders his people to wipe out entire civilizations, and they do. Sounds a bit Hitlerish, don't it?

It was for Anne Heche. There is also abundant evidence that life experiences, especially sexual-related trauma, affect sexual preference. So while it seems likely that some aspects of homosexuality are genetic, some clearly are not. Moreover, one could easily apply your same reasoning for pedophelia to homosexuality. Gays can choose not to have gay sex. I'm not saying they should, I'm just pointing out the flaws in your reasoning.

The reason so many people "pick out the parts they don't like and throw them out" is that the bible is loaded with contradictions. Even someone who hasn't studied it in depth, but who has done significant reading in it, can easily find places where it contradicts itself. Not even the greatest bible scholars can agree on why those contradictions are there or on what each passage means or what the book as a whole means. Good grief, there's not even a concensus on whether it's been translated accurately from the original languages in which it was composed. So how is the average joe to decide? Whose interpretation does he accept?

The pat answer is to tell someone to "seek the truth & pray for God to show you the way." Plenty of sincere people do, & surprise! They don't all come up with the same answers.

BTW, your analogy was fine--it was perfectly clear what you meant  I see the point you're trying to make. I just think that when it comes to certain "doctrines" of Christianity, it's more complicated than that. Not everyone within the Christian community can agree certain doctrines (including the interpretations regarding homosexuality) are truly biblical &/or from God. Even when certain things are agreed upon, there's disagreement on exactly how an issue should be handled.

Uhm ... it's not like those are dead languages. Anyone can learn them and study the original works if you really want to. In fact, it's often required of people who enter the seminary.

Perhaps I should have made myself clearer, although I thought I did so abudantly when I said I was arguing about being a homosexual and that I was NOT debating the actions of a homosexual. Sin is what you DO, not what you ARE.

I'm glad you cleared this up for me. I think there is still some debate about why some people have homosexual tendencies, the act is a choice. The question of the thread was whether one could be homosexual and a christian, I think one could be, just as I could be a liar, thief, adulterer, etc and still be a christian, repentence is agreeing with God that these are wrong. JMO Collin will probably say this clearer.

Us average joes learn all we can, seek wise counsel and try to live what we know to be true, I know there are seemingly contradictions, many times these are answered by looking at the historical context, sometimes they aren't. To me the homosexual question is pretty clearly answered both in the Old Testament(Leviticus) and New Testament(Romans). How to handle the issue is tricky, acceptance of the sinner does not equal acceptance of the sin.

That was the original question, yes, and I think it's been healthy to discuss the nature of homosexuality, even if we don't agree. At least we know where we all stand on that topic.

My life experience goes against what the Bible says about homosexuality, which is why I question it as something written by men who didn't understand it. I mean, these are the same men who repressed women for centuries.
