BR upconverts regular DVDs? I thought that BR was a completely different format than DVD. At least, thats the impression that I got from the guy at Circuit City.

Good move. It's the best blu player under say $600 and it is also futureproof to the upcoming 2.0 profile. It's also a much better upconverting dvd player than the x360 (with or without the hd-dvd add on, it doesn't matter.)

To clear up some confusion, every blu ray player (as well as hd-dvd player) will upconvert dvds. Some will do it better than others. The PS3 is rated one of the best dvd upconverters around.

Never ever ever ever ever listen to the people at those places. You got sold because thats the only way they could get rid of the HDDVD players.

At least they're equal opportunity liars. If he had strayed over to the BR aisle, the story would have been flipped.

BluRay is a different format from HD-DVD, which is a different format from Std DVD. Most BluRay and HD-DVD players will upconvert Std DVD's

Actually to be honest the Blu-Ray format is closer to the original format than HD-DVD is.

All is not lost, keep your eyes open for really cheap hd-dvds. There are still quite a bit of films exclusive to the format. And technically, Universal and Paramount are both still exclusive to hd-dvd.
