    He beat the crap out of an army scout who was smacking Newt around. He semi-acknowledged him and offered him his last name at the end of Lonesome Dove. So I guess the answer is no he never really did right by Newt. Gus had to tell Newt that Call was his father.

    It has been a long time since I watched Lonesome Dove but I do not think Pearly is in it. Gus and Call and several others retire from the Rangers and move away from Austin and to Lonesome Dove. I think Pearly stays in Austin.
