yeah, mpeg2 sucks balls. or rather, lossy compression sucks balls. i mean, really, mpeg2 is kinda neat, but people push it too far. i remember watching the movie "hero" on my digital cable ages ago. there's a scene where dustin hoffman is inside this burning plane -- it's a dark scene with lots of dark, roiling smoke. it was completely unwatchable -- blocky and quantized beyond belief. couldn't tell anything that was going on.

and lossy compression is where the horrors of directv recompressing things takes an extra toll on your image quality. decoding, scaling down, then re-encoding a video stream is going to be worse than just scaling down and encoding an original clean signal.

    Ok, to stir the pot.

Is 1080p really worth it on a 42" or 46"?

edit: just saw where this was already mentioned

Looks like I am either going to go with the Samsung LNT4661F 46" 1080p LCD or Samsung LNT4665F 46" 1080p LCD HDTV from Amazon.

Is there much price difference? I'd be the type to buy the 61F if it's $200+ cheaper.

    Yeah, it's about 200 different.

    1300 something for the 61
    1500 something for the 65

WTF...either the prices changed in an hour or I was reading it wrong and looking at the other sellers section.

    Fuck

Those prices are through Ritz Camera. Any thoughts on them or tigerdirect?

    Sears.

Present from wife. Didn't even think to ask what it cost but I'm sure it'll be a little cheaper online.

Great picture and lots of adjustments you can make. You can even get a wall mount that you hook to the tv and via remote can adjust the viewing angles, etc.
