Why not just get a cheap Blu-Ray player and extend the life of your game console? Perhaps they have improved the movie playing qualities of the current hardware for both consoles, but with the PS2, playing DVDs significantly detracted from the lifespan of the console.

Im a ps3 owner that had the same dilemma not too long ago.

I watch more movies than play video games so I was leaning towards the PS3 for the BR. Got the 60 gig version for backwards compatibility but ive really used it for just two games in 6 months. Ive still got my PS2 to play those old games still hooked up anyway. So maybe the price drop with less features isnt a bad idea.

Games seem to be coming out at an equal pace now. Unless your a gamer that never leaves his room there should be enough game titles to satisfy any new gamer. Some X-box titles appear to be getting higher reviews, earlier with madden it was all about the FPS 30/60 thing.I think that point is moot now as all new games are 60 now. EA just screwed the pooch last year on madden for some reason.

X-box LIVE does seem to be the best online, at least thats what they say. But i dont play online at all anyway so i cant comment on that.

All i'll say is i havent regretted my decision yet and you're guarenteed to never get the 3 rings of death with PS3.

Here is Yahtzee's take on the console war:

I know some people have had the dreaded RROD on 360's, but so far, (knock on wood), I haven't. Had mine for about a year.

I don't play fanboy for amd or intel, or sony or microsoft, but I generally like the 360's online play (xbox live > all), which is strong enough to end the debate for me, but the game library is currently a little better for the 360. The latter doesnt really matter to me, as I tend to buy the games that are made for every single machine on the planet (MADDEN ON UR BALCKBERRY YO!!!)

As for movie playback, I'd strongly advise a stand alone player if you are a movie watcher. My brothers have run through so many consoles (PS2, PS3, 360) trying to use them as all around machines. Plus, the exhaust fans are pretty loud on some (I cant remember if the PS3 is, but the 360 is).

Don't play fanboy? On what planet?

Your posts in here, tech and music make you a fanboy almost by definition.

So stop using the term so I can quit laughing.

i'll ask my gamer friend about his. i think he loves it.

when watching bladerunner the other night at his house through the 360, it kept popping up the usernames of his xbox friends who were coming online.

    pretty neat.

Ugh I couldn't stand that feature during movies, it took a little searching but you can disable it. Totally takes me out of the movie.

When I'm playing games though, it's great.

I did. Just to make sure. The only thing missing from your resume here @ TBR - between arguing TV pixels and gameboxes while listening to music on a station that certainly isn't owned by Clear Channel - is a discussion of whether or not Frank Miller did better stuff for Batman or Daredevil.

But I figure that's only a matter of time.

i talked to him about the RROD tonight.

he said he's on his second xbox -- something about elite?

said that there's about a 35% chance of your xbox dying.

said that his xbox live is still f'ed up since the christmas break overload.

also said that the new xboxes with a phoenix (?) chip in it wont go bad.

he explained about the motherboards melting and popping out the gpus.

    damn.

i thought microsoft sucked for PCs -- that is awful.
